Looking for online backup solutions that support both file level restores and system (bare metal) restores. I haven't found one yet. We need this for a temporary solution.

    • RE: Cannot decide between 1U servers for growing company

We use lots of 1U Servers.

Only servers that are 2U are backup appliances (which have 40TB of storage)

However, that being Said 400 is relatively small and when I worked at companies that small we usually used 2U with local replicated storage.

Also do not used ProxMox.. Just don't it's a toy.

Just every employee uses outlook. Its very common to have employee's shifted from one workstation to another. So having data saved locally on a workstation here is a nope.

Outlook profiles should never ever be on the network. PSTs and OSTs are never suppose to be there. Microsoft even states this.

Looks like we will us Carbonite.. However these servers aren't well maintained (they came from a buy out of another company) and the install isn't going well. I've got 1TB just on one SQL server to backup though.

I think SMBs tend to focus on the wrong thing when they have lots of other low hanging fruit. More complexity doesn't nessecerily mean more security. Also how big of a target are you anyway? A doctor doesn't go giving you medicine for something you have low risk for.

Most companies would freak out if they saw our logs and how many hacking attempts we get in just a few minutes.

Why do you still have XP and Office 2003... this is a bad idea even when you aren't trying to open questionable Excel files...

Company I work need connect to some old machines using Com port, with very specific software, this software It's not compatible with W7 or W8.1, so I've some old laptops, out from the company Domain, for this Tasks.
I'm using one of this laptops to fill the excel file.

About the file I get the English version, Microsoft send me the spanish version, and works fine in Excel 2013.

Almost all those old apps people say won't work in on newer OSes will if you make enough work arounds for it.

For com ports VLINX serial network servers are great.

nope, but then again I have never used them.

Have you, in that case, seen data loss through servers being stolen?

Nope, and I don't know of any first hand experiences either.

Most burglars will have plenty on their plate stealing all of the desktops/laptops that are just lying around. It's easy to sell off laptops and desktops.. servers not so much.

Plus if your servers are behind other locked doors, it's unlikely they will continue spending time breaking into more doors again with all of the desktops/laptops around.

So don't store data on the laptops directly. If they get stolen no big deal. That's seems to get ride of most of the risk.

It's amazing.. that whole limited access thing is something I've seen no health system actually implement.

The comment here is that every staff member who has anything to do with the medical side in one way shape or form (that includes me, the IT guy) needs to have full access to all patient information in order to do our jobs.

Frankly, I'm not sure how you build an easy to use system that limits what nurses and medical assistants can get access to, let along actual providers. Remember that near real time granted access would be a requirement in many cases.

In some health systems I've seen them try to limit who has access by requiring things like a patients SSN as proof they are somehow connected with the patient - but that just doesn't seem right to me.

I agree the healthcare system, from small office to large conglomerate is ignoring a lot of this.

Which is exactly why health systems like the one in my article make it simpler by just encrypting the hard drive. Lose a machine, not an issue.

Encrypting data doesn't prevent authorized people from accessing or using data in an unauthorized manor.

But it doesn't address the issues. I've never seen or heard of a HIPAA issue that this would have protected against except in cases of reckless storage of data on end points - often likely because someone was trying to put data into a precarious position.

They don't need to address the issues.

People can keep working as they are used to, with the tools they need, and are protected by the encryption.

Why reinvent the entire wheel, best practice or not?

Because that is the easiest way to steal data. It's the simplest to protect against also. The current way is about giving an image of security without actual security.

I know internally the NAS or even DAS would have read/write capabilities which would exceed regular 1Gbe network transfer rates.

as a RAID-10 array with 4 disks of 7200 RPM drives would easily be in the 350-450MB/s range.

So if a user was pulling or saving or copying a file from their workstation, over to the network share. That file copy would only be at wire speed or network switching speeds.

Or am I missing a something

Why would you go for a more complex setup when a simpler setup would actually work better?

True. There's never a 1-size fits all scenario. I can see the merits of doing it though, both for a backup location, as well as for live storage. In some cases it would make sense to use it for live storage, and others it would make more sense to use it only for backups.

There are colo's as well as data services for backups. Normal "cloud" type stuff is better at processing than massive storage with long (or forever) retention periods.

If you are using Amazon, they claim to have your stuff backed up somewhere (I am unsure as the retention / how often the backups are taken, etc).

Most of them are just addon services. there not backed up by default. infact for large farms of servers that are just web fronts/data processing you usually don't back them up you just have a script or something to configure them easily because if you lose a few it's not big deal.

It may be worth reporting the end users who continuously ask to have their passwords reset to their respective managers (even if they are employees of the other company).

I say this because if EmployeeA from the other company leaves and they never disable that employee's account, they potentially still have access to your stuff after they are no longer employed. If you have a website that helps them reset their passwords... They should be directed to it... Every. Single. Time. Hold their hands a few times and let THEM do the password reset while you watch over their shoulder or do a screen sharing session.

The end users never learn anything if we juts keep doing it for them.

This is a big issue. We has a Self service portal. And require a new password every 90days.

If that is the case, then your end-users should well know how to reset their password in the Self Service Portal. 🙂

And our technicians never get tickets for that either.. Sorry. I couldn't even keep a straight face typing that.

No Idea. WD redid their lines recently. I'd really just pickup a lot of used drives for a lab. You can find 10x 1TB deals on eBay sometimes for $200
