This is exactly how we often act in IT.

Yep, and just because you and I know better, doesn't mean we are going to stop him from proving it to himself. Have you ever seen a boy become a man without passing through adolescences?

It is possible to assist him in this matter and then talk (in a new thread) about why IT people should not tolerate this kind of treatment. Often, it is better to work through the problem at hand first, then circle back around and figure out how to prevent it from happening again.

I think this thread is a good example. Let's (those who have the answers he needs) get him through this WiFi issue, and then talk about how he needs to insist on proper planning earlier in the project next time.

In all my years as a multiple business owner, I've never once seen where beating someone over the head produced a better long term outcome, than taking their hand and walking along side them as you provide sound advice and direction. Even if they walk slower than you.

@siringo Should all be fine. I can give specific examples of problems, but they have all been one off issues. I would say that 99.9% go flawlessly and the user sees no issues or degradation at all. Log in as admin ad run the decrappify script talked about here: https://www.republicofit.com/topic/19157/script-to-clean-up-windows-10-start-menu and they'll even have a very clean start menu and a decluttered OS as much of the Windows store crap is removed.

You see it incorrectly. It's your right to have your opinion, but your view point here does not reflect any reality or fact. Under no condition is what you describe in any way your problem.

But the bosses believe (rightfully so) that IT guys are a dime a dozen, so unless you want to find yourself looking for a new employer on someone else's terms, you deliver to the extent you are willing and able, which may or may not be to the same extent as the next guy. But it's what you do......

Yeah - he was cheating - asking to see if someone else had experience and could just point him in the right direction...

I don't agree with this for one second. Asking questions and bouncing ideas off one another is what we're all her for. Or, at least it should be. Besides, how the hell is that cheating? Is ML some kind of online university no one told me about? You may have real experience, and you may think you are adults, but you all still act like 7th graders.

You have no idea what time constraints or work load he is dealing with at this moment. We all know, as well as @WrCombs, how to go figure all of this out on our own. Sometimes that is just stupid. A quick answer or being pointed in the right direction may be just what he needed to resolve this problem quickly and efficiently. If I had the answer, I'd gladly give it to him with any BS attached.

Certainly the shit you all have strewn about today has been a complete waste of time, especially yours.

And the constant insisting that people tell their boss to f*ck themselves every time they need something that is beneath you is no way to make a living.

If all of you pulled that shit as often as you tell other people to, you'd all be out of work. And if you say it ain't so, I'll call BS.

Just think what better lives you'd have if you kept quiet when you didn't have anything useful or positive to say. I honestly don't know where you all find the energy to be such jerks all the time.

    • Cost Pros and Cons for VDI in DataCenter

I was just asked to provide proposals for a small company to evaluate; one for replace the in-house server and continue the cycle of replacing PCs, and one to go VDI with the Host in a data center.

Do any of you ( @scottalanmiller ) have a bullet point list that covers the pros and cons of VDI v. Traditional compute environments?

I'm going to write it all up for them, but I don't want to miss any of the hidden costs and benefits.

      Thanks.

Go back and count the steps that you just listed.

It's two clicks from SC, and since we only work in domain environments, we import the GPO as part of our on-boarding. Since we script everything, and our next customer is not our first customer, the workload to accomplish the auto power on task as described here is undetectable.

I have used the Nk2edit And you can push it to the Office Cloud Autocomplete from an NK2 or the Stream file. However when Nk2edit can’t read a file it is usually corrupted and you need a previous version of the file.

The current file is usable under the in house exchange,, and I have restored a few versions from backup.. Still no luck.. I may just be SOL.

    • Streaming music for office (or anywhere)

Had a customer call and ask us to come and setup 10 Sonos speakers for their office. They said they picked them up because their overhead system was static-ee.

I assured them this was the wrong approach because commercial amps with 70v speakers don't just go bad all at once. It had to be FM reception.

It was. But they really wanted the Sonos so they could stream music. I told them this was silly because they already had a beautful sound system in place. They just needed a new source.

I installed a Nexum Tunebox2 https://www.nexum-design.com/tunebox2 for them and I have to say, it is truly sweet.

Use any smart device or PC or MAC to tell it what to stream, and then you can disconnect and it will sing forever. Of course it'll do other things too. But set and forget was the goal.

Just thought I'd share about this little box. $64 on amazon.

@Dashrender I left this out earlier for fear he would say I was conflating....

Here's our push for power-on for dell PCs, we push it with GPO, or ScreenConnect, or drop it in the startup folder with a script that uses an admin$ share. Most bios mfrs have a utility for editing bios remotely.

It sets it up the way we want, and if someone changes it, it auto re-applies at the next boot.

      \\server\netlogon\cctk\x86_64\cctk --autoon=everyday --valsetuppwd= -l=c:\pc.log
      \\server\netlogon\cctk\x86_64\cctk --autoonhr=22 --valsetuppwd= -l=c:\pc.log
      \\server\netlogon\cctk\x86_64\cctk --autoonmn=0 --valsetuppwd= -l=c:\pc.log

In this customer's - from a power POV, I could easily designate a single machine as an always on machine for this purpose

I always set one or more machines to power on at 10:00pm (bios)
One if they prefer not to leave them on, then I use WoL to power the others up when I need to (updates).

All if they don't have a preference and it's a small office.
