I don't see the big deal here. It sounds like sending messages works, but user is unable to see sent items in Outlook. However OWA and mobile client are showing sent messages.

      1. Use OWA. It's better in every way and more reliable

      2. If user must use Outlook, then they can only bring up OWA on rare occasion they need to search sent emails.

Isn't your time better spent elsewhere?

@irj It requires 10g networking to the data repository for performing analytics on collected data. There will be large amounts of data eventually. The software developer requires 8 cores and 32g of ram minimum. I don't see how that much compute can be done in containers. I don't use them so I can't speculate on how well or not it would work.

That's fine. It still shouldn't matter which hypervisory you use. Containerized applications are built for scaling so that wouldn't be an issue.

It's extremely shitty development practice for the devs to have any concern about hypervisor. Put it on Docker and use on any platform on prem or in the cloud.

This is the perfect opportunity for the devs to join the last decade and use containers. Also if running only a few workloads on Linux, why purchase hardware at all?

That, too. Like this is not a skill anyone would ever need. Ever.

Especially considering the hundreds of free online calculators. The ones that can do this in their head are network guys from 90s, and the only reason they can do it in their head is because they've worked with it back when there was a lack of technology like VLANs.

@irj Nice. Since I left that comment I bought a pre-built as a graduation gift to myself as it seems the only way to get anything at the moment. I went with the 3900X / Radeon RX 6700XT combo. I got about a 6 week wait though.

One thing I would consider, if you haven't thought about it already, in relation to your original question is your power consumption. I noticed the 3900X is 105W whereas the 5600X is only 65W.

Unfortunately I found out my motherboard is not backwards compatible so I will be sticking with 5600x for a little while. I woolf eventually like to upgrade to a 5900x when I can find one for MSRP. The upgrade cost from Dell was more than Msrp on 5900x so I will just wait.

I have a 1000watt PSU so CPU power consumption shouldn't matter much for me.

With alienware they estimate about a month build time, but mine is coming sooner. My expected ship date was May 4, but mine just shipped today 😎

    • Ryzen 3900x vs 5600x

As some of you may know I bought a pre built gaming system for gaming and crypto mining.

I spec'ed some things low like 8gb ram and 7200 rpm hard drive. Yes you can buy a $3k desktop with a spinning disk and 8gb of RAM 😂😂😂

So I bought 32gb of RAM and 1TB NVME and things will be great once I get the system... Except I have another bottleneck

The ryzen 5600x is an awesome processor, but it only has 6 cores. Not o problem if I plan on running a single OS, but I really want to run Ubuntu as host and run windows as VM. Even just doing that spreading out those cores will hurt performance.

So for under $500 I can get a Ryzen 3900x, which has 12 cores.

      https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07SXMZLP9/

I can get $300-350 for used Ryzen 5600x. So for about $200 net I can upgrade from 6 cores to 12 cores.

And yes my motherboard is compatible with both series... Is there anything I'm not thinking about here that may be a reason not to do this?

      Hi there,

I have total of 8 years of IT Experience as IT Generalist mostly. Current position is in Windows environment.

I'm familiar with open source tools, and have little work experience on Linux (CentOS and Ubuntu).

Trying to stream line the career into following areas:

      1. Full time Linux Administrator
      2. DevOps
      3. System Administrator (Windows and Linux)

In this process, I want to learn Linux deeply and get RHCSA certification.

Thinking to get a course in Udemy (because it's cheap), and of course spinning RHEL 8 on VMs under Developer Plan etc. Any cheap or free book (soft) will be great, I will get it printed and study.

Any relevant suggestions are welcome, either with regards to Linux or Career.

@EddieJennings did some great YouTube tutorials and talka on it. He can help you out.

You really shouldn't be booting for USB, and should be using a hypervisor even if it's hyper V (which isn't the best IMO, but still 100x better than booting from USB).
Once you get the hypervisor up and running then you can start creating VMs from it and get up and running.

I don't know what are you trying to say?
@perja11 is trying to install XCP-NG as hypervisor, so it's OK to boot from USB (and install on baremetal)

I think @IRJ was assuming that the OP was attempting to run the hypervisor from a USB drive.

Yeah I mistakenly thought that. @stacksofplates set me straight offline 😂

      @irj said in Single 32gb DDR4 RAM vs 2x16gb:

I just bought a pre-built desktop from Dell. I opted not to upgrade the memory as it was much more expensive to do through them.

My system is only coming with a single 8gb RAM stick which is obviously unacceptable. The motherboard has 4 RAM slots and supports up to 128GB.

I'm looking at single 32GB sticks vs 2x16. The single sticks are appealing to me because it makes it easier to upgrade in the future. I could eventually have 32x4 to make 128GB.

Now I don't see needing more than 40gb currently which is why I was thinking 32gb would be fine.

Ok that's alot of rambling... My main question is single stick performance vs using RAM in channel. What would you do?

As a general rule, I always try to use as many RAM sticks as the controller has memory channels. Until recently you could assume 2 channels per CPU in a desktop, but AMD has changed that recently with some of their midrange to high end desktop CPUs.

I went with Ryzen 5000 series.

      https://www.dell.com/en-us/shop/gaming-and-games/alienware-aurora-ryzen-edition-r10-gaming-desktop/spd/alienware-aurora-r10-desktop

That case is just so ugly!

I love the white one. The black case I think they could have done much better.

I'm not a fan of windowed cases with a ton of lights.

      Hello,

I have created XCP-NG bootable disk using rufus for our dell physical server. When I insert my USB stick into the USB port and then after restarting the DELL physical server I don't get XCP-NG splash screen instead it is just blank.

Isn't it possible to install XCP-NG on windows server directly ?

Is there anything to be looked on ?

At this point, I'd contact a managed service provider like NTG @scottalanmiller or Bundy and Associates @JaredBusch .

I think spending a couple hours getting this configured and learning a little bit about managing servers and Installing operating systems would be helpful.

90% of jobs I'm looking at are remote post covid. Remote work existed before, but was less common

But 90% of good jobs were remote PRE-COVID. Anyone who is remote only because of COVID is a shitty shop that got better because they had to... means that the management failures are still there. Don't be lulled by jobs forced to look better than they are temporarily.

Good shops were always remote (when possible.) You can't be good and make people come into the office just for shits and giggles, the two are polar opposites conceptually. You can only make one thing a priority... is it doing a good job, or is it sitting in an office.

I've still had a few jobs reach out and say they are remote until covid crap is over then they want you to move somewhere.. I just tell them no thanks I'm not interested in even talking.

Did any of those jobs that reached out to you explain why they are no longer going to be remote post-covid?

The reasoning doesn't matter to me. They aren't being competitive in the job market with policies like that.
