Big fan of PDQ Inventory and Deploy.

Yeah. I was hero at my old job for bringing those into our environment.

It's all the 3rd party ones that are questionable. Yet another reason I don't like Ubuntu, much of the software comes from 3rd party repos.

Tin foil hat guys will tell you absolutely trust no one. There are some steps you can take to individually check apks. Also, automatic updates are disabled by default. So you can manually install updates and pre analyze apks. Every time before install.

There are some tools that help with this. This is just one example:

On top of that, since they don't believe they can find a replacement who does everything I do for a reasonable price, they instead tell me I have to find my own replacement and to "use my circles" to track down a technical person.

I don't think that's a good thing - it shows that they aren't really participating in the rest of the world.. even more corruption.

LOL what isn't corruption with you? A country doing well is corrupt. A country falling apart is corrupt. What isn't?

Human Government is always corrupt which is why I am for less government in most situations. There is no 100% right answer since government regulation is needed for certain areas, but we have seen every government fall to corruption throughout history. Sometimes it takes years, decades, centuries, or whatever but entropy always seem to exist. In some cases, government can be re-established, but at that point it dies and is recreated. Entropy seems to be true 99.9% of the time when it comes to government.

Good luck keeping it within a reasonable scope!

Yeah, that really is the issue here. We are documenting all software used in the org. Which happens to be in thousands. Security assessments were not done on everything. Sure cloud based stuff and major applications went through the hoops, but I am talking about onesies and twosies of software here and there. That alone accounts for thousands of software. We are trying to consolidate and re-assess everything.

Since there will be thousands done, it may be worth the time to do this right.

    • RE: KVM USB Wake Issues

I've had this same issue in Fedora 29 workstation. I cant seem to remember it being an issue before the upgrade to 29. Although, it is a weird issue and my VMs are just used for testing so I cannot say for sure.

I have had them just show black screens and not wake up at least 20 different times where I had to do a hard reset. I wish I had more info, but these are just test boxes so I havent cared too much.

Sorry I was no help 😕

How do you guys handle brining in new vendors and software? Do you use questionnaires for vendor to fill out? How many questions do you ask? Who is making final call to actually bring in these vendors or software from a security prospective?

    • RE: Alternative to BetterCloud

You need to be very careful with any security products these days. We find that the vast majority are just capitalizing on the security gold rush right now. My company gets to test alot of products and we find the vast majority to be pretty bad.

I have no experience with Better Cloud, so I'm not saying it's good or bad. I'm just saying you have to be very careful with security application promises.

They have a Windows based application that runs on the server. Linux isn't an option.

Why not segregate duties virtually then? Have file shares on Linux and have your app run on Windows?

That wouldn't work for this program. Windows is a requirement for this case.

I hear companies say that alot, but they dont always have a valid reason. SMB is SMB.

No one here knows - we don't run that software.

No one here runs Server 2019 Essentials?

No - most here run standard Windows Server or some flavor or Linux. Essentials is only for SUPER tiny environments (I think it's limited to 25 connections)... a version that at least with 2012 didn't require User CALs, making it significantly cheaper for super tiny shops that required Windows, but once you hit over 25, you got a HUGE upgrade cost i.e. full server license and 25+ CALs.

Yep. It is generally not reliable either. At least earlier version weren't. Throw all MS services on one piece of underpowered hardware and then throw all your apps over it. What could go wrong?

I guess i was lucky - when they started calling it Essentials - there weren't that many services left - File/Print/AD/DNS/DHCP and what WSUS? that's all pretty typical single box stuff in my mind. WSUS could be shit for sure, but the rest can work together no issues.

Back when it was SBS server and had Exchange and possibly a corporate firewall and SQL server - OMG - yeah, kill me now!.

That's just the out of the box stuff that can be simple solved off windows very easily 😉

Dont forget that these businesses like to throw quickbooks and other poorly made sofware on their Essentials server including these other services which are already too much to have on one box IMO. It's 2019, virtualize 🙂

It would be interesting to know if Essentials allows for the install of 3rd party software like that?
      Probably does..

Of course it does... That is exactly what OP is doing.

The whole point of Essentials is to run Essentials (aka essential services). Like it should be dedicated to AD, DNS, DHCP.

This was kinda my point - though I consider print and file as part of that as well.

Right and I'd do printer in a small environment, but I dont know if there is ever a reason to do a file server on your DC

Well the reason is because "it costs so much" to purchase Windows Server X again and licensing for just that service. It's why so many businesses did it.

One Drive is a no brainer IMO if you have under $25 users
