Got a Pi
I am a little late to the party, but I got a Raspberry Pi 3 Model B to use an entertainment center. Should be fun to play with.
I also snagged a couple Zeros although I am not sure how much I am saving with the zero since for my purposes I need a wifi dongle. With the Dongle they are $17 plus $5 shipping. I can get a Pi 3 Model B for $35 with free prim shipping.

RE: Cross Post - How to prevent a company laptop/device from working on external networks
What is the point of having a laptop if it isn't portable?

I left Samsung for Huawei
Another one of my Samsung phones bit the dust (physical damage). The Galaxy S3 was probably my favorite phone of all time, but after the S3 I noticed Samsung phones changed quite a bit. Samsung started to try to imitate Apple by giving you no external storage options and a non-removable battery. Not only were changes made on hardware, but TouchWiz progressively became more closed as they introduced Knox and continued to lock it down.
The problem is that only Apple can really pull that off. Apple makes the best locked down devices. You don't buy an android phone to have it locked down. You buy android for it's versatility. If I wanted a dependable locked down device, I would go with an iPhone. They are just better for that type of application.
Anyway, a coworker of mine showed me the Honor 8. I read some reviews on it and the price for the hardware is pretty amazing. 4GB of Ram and an octacore processor in the same league as the Galaxy S7 for half the price. After reading many positive reviews. I found a brand new one on Craigslist right down the road from for $150 cheaper than retail.
My first impression of the phone was that I picked up an iPhone. Huawei's flavor of android is very similar to iOS from the layout to the menus. Apple users would definitely feel at home. I am in not a fan of no app drawer so I installed my favorite launcher right off the bat. Ok cool, I am back to a familiar place. The flavor that the Huawei is using is pretty damn secure. I had to give everything permissions even system apps like phone, internet browser, etc which is something I really love. It also does a great job of killing apps in the background. If an app like facebook or amazon randomly start running in the background you get a pop up and option to close it. Now that feature I love! It was a constant battle with 3rd party task killing apps before. You always needed root for them to work they way you wanted to.
As far as performance. This is hands down the fastest phone I have ever had. Even though the S7 is slightly better on paper and wins out in categories such as camera, TouchWiz is a bloated beast that slows it down.
The screen reminds me on iPhone screen. It is very sharp and beautiful. My S6 screen had great resolution, but the colors didn't pop like the iPhone screen or the Honor 8.

IT Security Update
I am really enjoying my full time security position. I love being able to find vulnerabilities and use exploits on a daily basis. The best part is no more calls at 2am for servers being down. That isn't my responsibility anymore
So 40 hours is really 40 hours which is great in IT.

RE: Home business ideas for transition out of 9-5?
PC Repair is dead. You may find the well off client that has a $2k machine once in awhile, but when you can get a PC for $200-300 new or a tablet for $40-100 you are virtually eliminating that market.
You should certainly work for a MSP before even considering starting one. You have no clue what they go through with client acquisition, quoting, businesses that don't want to pay, etc.

RE: Resume critique
@wirestyle22 said in Resume critique:
@WrCombs build a home lab and include it on your resume. I created a ton of web servers (nextcloud, rocketchat, nodebb, plex, zabbix, zimbra, bookstack etc) and brought a laptop to show them what they are while providing use cases for each. Who cares if you list something on a piece of paper when you can literally show them what you built and explain it to them.
When you apply at 15 jobs and 3 call you for phone interviews, you then go over their job description. See what products they use. If it is something you have never used before, you spin it up in your lab before the phone interview. If you cannot spin it up in your lab, you watch youtube videos on the product.
That way in the interview when they ask about product X, you can say I dont have alot of experience with it but i do have some lab and testing experience. Then you proceed to lay down all you know about the product. You dont have to mention that you spun it up yesterday and you dont have to get into a deep dive.
Even if they assume that you looked into the product before the interview, it is still a huge edge and shows that you know what the fuck you are doing.

Awesome Google Doc Monitoring Script
I am using this script to montior uptime on my website. When my website is down, I get an email and SMS message to my phone. I have tested shutting off my server and I get a notification within a minute on SMS and email. I also received another notification when I turned the server back on.
