Have you considered starting your own business of some sort, fresh? $500 isn't a lot, but it's a good start on doing something of your own.

$500 is not enough to legally start a business in most US states. Canada is typically seen as even more expensive.

You could technically start a business fairly cheaply in Canada. If you operate under your own name and only do a limited amount of gross, you don't even need to register anything in some provinces. However, I believe Manitoba isn't quite as lax. Also, if you're physically performing service in an area, typically you need to get municipal permits in each area.

And most likely, doing work as a contractor through Upwork would technically mean you are operating some kind of business.

Because Graylog has been an Elastic Stack for a really long time now, as has ELK. Rebranding something new as something that already exists is a mess.

And I'm sure there are lots of custom elastic stacks out there

I'm getting the feeling that if you want a real Enterprise setup with the Elastic Stack, eventually you will end up having to pay $$

I think the open source version pretty much does what you need.

We need Ops to have access and then Devs to have access only to data from the project they are on the team for.

Doesn't the free open source GrayLog do that for you as it is?

Yeah, which is why I'm leaning towards GrayLog

Oh, I misunderstood your comment about needing to pay for the Elastic stack. Because Graylog is an Elastic stack as wel. ELK and Graylog are competing Elastic stacks.

ELK + Beats is now rebranded as "The Elastic Stack"

I suppose we could try to put additional authentication in front of elasticsearch, and then just have multiple Kibana instances all with different access to elasticsearch. Failing that, we would be looking at separate ELK deployments per project - which could be an option, but might kind of suck for Ops

We've been planning for Prometheus + Grafana for metrics, so if we open up Elastic Stack as on option, we will have to see if we want to use it for metrics instead.

It doesn't help in the initial decision making that these products can all be combined in all kinds of ways, but I suppose it will help in the future if we need something different without having redo the entire setup to meet a new business need.

Overall, Graylog has been better for most shops because it is more complete without needing to do a lot of plumbing on your own.

The Elastic stack looks like it would be fun, but Kibana login authentication would be a problem. Offloading login to nginx + LDAP would be ok, but not being able to define access roles would be a problem for us.

It sounds like there's a decent open source alerts plugin for the Elastic Stack, but built in authentication + alerting does make GrayLog the more attractive solution.

It's not about brief or lengthly, but anticipate the questions that the employer is asking when looking at your resume and clearly and concisely answer them.

Don't put in stuff they're not going to care about. But make sure you put in enough for them to be able to think you might be a good fit.

I guess I will make mine more brief.

I'm against the ML general consensus here. At least in Canada, I believe when employers say resume, they mean more like a CV. I've been through resume writing instruction once in secondary school, and twice in post secondary school. Never was taught to make it one page. Before I got my current job, I watched a resume writing course and it said to not worry about limiting it to one page.

Pretty much every province has a requirement that cars need to be certified/"safetied" as well as emissions tested. Except, at this time, Alberta -- though they're trying to change that.

It's a question of when it has to be safetied. For example, in Saskatchewan, if you are buying a vehicle in Saskatchewan from someone who currently has that vehicle registered, it does not need to be safetied for you to register it. A vehicle can go it's whole life in Saskatchewan, changing hands, without needing another safety. However, if the registration lapses, or if the vehicle is coming from out of province, then it needs to be safetied.

      Yep, just a regular day.

How is things for you ? i think i might also move in couple of months to Manitoba as well. What advice can you give me ? I will stay a year or so.

      How is transportation there ?

First of all, you have to get an apartment that has nearby bus stop and has buses that pass by time to time. You don't want to stay outside for 30mins in a -40C temperature. Some bus stops has corridors, some has heaters on the bench but most of them doesn't have. I'm lucky that I can see the upcoming bus from my apartment so I wait inside the building and I only ride 1 bus going to work. I suggest to get a car immediately once you get here.

Another thing is, invest on clothing! That's very important. It will benefit you in the long run.

      Thanks,
I dont think we can get any good clothing for winter as the ones they sell there. I looked online and it seems used cars are cheap in Canada, can you really get one for only 1000 CAD ?

It's possible, but in Manitoba every vehicle has to get a safety inspection when it changes owners. Some people will sell a used vehicle with inspection papers, but for $1000 they probably will not.

So I'd you buy a car for $1000, you then have to get it inspected before you can register it, after it is inspected you have get all the repairs the inspection requires. I think when we moved to Manitoba, we had to do $1500 in repairs on our vehicle.

    • RE: Never Give More than Two Weeks Notice

OH&S (in Canada) was a part of my apprenticeship schooling. Both the employer and the employee have responsibilities, but if you ever actually report anything that can be traced back to you in a company of less than 200 people, you might as well start job searching.

But if your employer still asks you to do something if you tell them you don't think it is safe, it's probably time to start looking anyway. The biggest problem I see is that employees will not tell the employer they think the work is not safe.
