Not legal. You can't legally use Windows Server for production purposes without it being licensed.

Also I dont see any licensing options for file server role, FYI.

@emad-r Why would you want to have a FIle Server in a Hyperv 2016 Server? Will this be for sharing files?

Alot of people stated that Windows handles file locking and sharing of excel files much better than Linux Samba, which is an issue i am having with my users. Excel Files in NAS that are run by SAMBA.

      I dont blame SAMBA ofcourse.

    • Hyper-V 2016 Server free file server included ?

So when I was playing with Hyper-V and remote managing it. I noticed I can install additional roles.

      0_1500669896946_2017-07-21 23_43_12-Server Manager.png

While the Remote Desktop Services included an licensing feature (you need to configure), where you can configure the licensing. The File Server does not have this. Thus if I used Windows Hyper-V standalone 2016 + File Server role, and not use the Hyper-V and use it for File Server is that okay ? and legit ?

This way I can get the get the benefit of Windows File services instead of using linux Samba, my question is did anybody noticed this or running this, and Do i get the full experience on SMB 3.1.1 like full server 2016 installation, any limitations ?

      Thanks

Imagine you want to patch ESXi, and you are connected via VPN VM running in that same ESXi host. And we dont have like 300 servers, more like 1-2 server per site. so you understand how difficult it can become.

No, I still don't understand. You are talking about adding another server to accommodate the VPN. So you are talking purely about consolidation as a concern, which it is, and not at all about virtualization as a concern (which it is not.)

Agree. Makes no sense. Move the VPN VM to another host before updating the original.

What if you only have 1 enterprise grade server in one site ? and you can just purchase another 3000$ server cause you ran out of budget, but you can get the AM1 AMD platform for 300$ and make it VPN server

I still don't see the logic. What's the connection between virtualization and all that cost? Why are you not virtualizing on the $300 AM1 board?

Ahh, now I see what you mean. Btw the board costs 50$ and the CPU that goes on top costs like another 50$ the whole AM1 AMD solution box with RAM + PSU + Drive will cost you = 300$

Umm, cause it will be only used for that role and that role only, no other thing. But I get your point now. If we want to think about virtualization as "hardware abstraction and driver containment" then it makes sense what you are saying.

The only thing I can think of you may not want to virtualize is VPN server.
cause if you want to reboot the Host hypervisor for whatever reason (maybe shutdown by disaster and not choice), it is bit tricky to diagnose and running when you cant connect especially if your working from home.

I reckon the AMD AM1 platform is an excellent platform for VPN server, especially if you get motherboard that gets charged using laptop charger (AM1H-ITX) you are free to experiment and deploy whatever VPN solution you want , or purchase a commercial VPN box.

That doesn't really make much sense either. If you can move the VM to another machine... if not you'd want to have tested this prior to going remote. In reality it seems very rare for a simple system, like a VPN, to go not come back up when a hypervisor reboots.

True it is very simple, but still there is risk like when power outages occurs and stuff like that. If you lost the VPN you no longer can access, thus in my mind separating it, seems like good idea. And will make my work on Hosts and updating the servers much easier, especially since its not VM and I dont have to worry about it (shutting down). But yes I understand what you mean with careful operation there shouldn't be any issues of it being an VM machine after all.

Imagine you want to patch ESXi, and you are connected via VPN VM running in that same ESXi host. And we dont have like 300 servers, more like 1-2 server per site. so you understand how difficult it can become.

      Hello,

Just raising awareness of this project that caught my eye:
      https://github.com/yueyongyue/saltshaker/blob/master/README.md
especially checking that screenshots. sadly the instructions are not very clear:
      https://github.com/yueyongyue/saltshaker/blob/master/install.txt

But I hope I can manage to install this on server separate from the salt master, and have it functioning with good guide.

Will keep you posted, and any help analyzing the instructions are welcomed.

I think if we looked it an another angle, if there is a true stable and opensource or free collaborate office server we can roll, Linux work great as thin client.

I tried NextCloud with Collabora Code also Only Office Container but it is not the same.

Nextcloud is amazing but the real time collaboration parts still need work on, give it a couple of years.

It's not a lost art. It's called slipstream and it's not difficult.

With everybody moving to Win 10, it is really lost art, why would you want to slipstream Win 10 image when you can download the cumulative update and deploy it for many machines after you finish.

      what country are you in?

and you broke the quote 🙂

I will answer your question, but first:

take a look at today job posting in my country:

      https://www.akhtaboot.com/en/jordan/jobs/amman
You would think I applied filter on them, cause they are all NGO, but no filter applied

But First page has 25 results of today job posting 20 of them are NGO, and not just 1 NGO that just opened... no no no no, we are talking about unique separate NGO including from today job list:

Department of Services to Palestinian Refugees - Amman, Jordan
      MSF-FRANCE - Amman, Jordan
      Mercy Corps - Amman, Jordan
World Vision International - Jordan - Amman, Jordan
International Rescue Committee - Amman, Jordan
Medecins du Monde - France - Amman, Jordan
International Relief and Development - Amman, Jordan
      INTERSOS - Amman, Jordan
Norwegian Refugee Council - ( Syria response office ) - Amman, Jordan
Syrian American Medical Society (SAMS) - Amman, Jordan
University Research Co - Amman, Jordan
      Relief International - Amman, Jordan
      IMMAP - Amman, Jordan

I see this everyday, not just today.

You want to know what attracts NGO = corruption, that what attracts NGOs. and that is my country state.
but it is not just it, it is the assholes managing those projects and fooling the people, sure aid work happens but at 10% rate, the rest is all tunneled somewhere. And local employees gets very little yet we witness very much.

Um research him and see how he does it, listen he is not cracker or pirate or hacker (my opinion), he uses official MSDN images and open about his methods, and he just provides you with like Windows 7 image up-to-date with .net 4.6 for example.

Also he can provide you with Windows 10 All In One release, like Windows 10 behemoth image with 26 options to install.

But honestly speaking I can see why it is lost art, today you Can install Windows 10
(whatever version you like) + Cumulative update and your good to go.

Really? When was the last time you install Windows 7? It took over 5 hours to install all the updates.

In I.T bench world, you can tick the option to install updates automatically, and give the client the machine and it will install updates by itself. No one has to babysit the whole thing (unless you really love that person you are helping).

Also I love system image modder by the name of murphy78, what he does is incorporates Windows 7 updates in the base installation image, without corrupting anything.

Yeah, can do this but every so often expect the call: "My PC that you repaired yesterday is so slow." - They won't appreciate it's doing a bazillion updates. IMO - should get to them up to date and ready.

Not sure if this would help, I know you said he wants the ease of use thing, but my solution would be storing those photos in new folder, and creating in that folder the file called .nomedia, and that will skip it from being indexed in the gallery.

So next time if he wants to go to the surgery photos, he will have to use the File Manager and not the gallery.

What prevents them from using O365? It's generally one of the least expensive enterprise email solutions available.

I think he means with full features

What features would be missing? Email, calendaring, contacts, OneDrive, Sharepoint, Skype for Business, are all available on Linux in one form or another.

Well specifically you left off all of the MS Office apps that can be installed locally. But I'm pretty sure it was Scott who said that WINE was originally created because someone wanted to run MS Office on Linux OSes

What benefit does Microsoft Office provide to a Linux shop that LibreOffice doesn't provide?

Libreoffice often requires conversion of the more complex office documents. If you can't seamlessly open them and have everything displayed correctly it's not very useful IMO. It's a little different if you're just starting your company and it starts as linux right in the beginning though.

The topic was about a Linux shop. If we're talking about a mixed shop you have a point, although it's not as big of an issue lately as it has been in the past.

They are likely to receive some type of office documentation via e-mail here so I'm considering that too

Any received or sent document shouldn't be in a doc format. They should be sending, and expecting, documents in pdf.

Bah I responded before I read the whole thread.

Unbelievably, we get quotes that are in all the time in both xls and doc.

I tried blocking doc/docx, etc at the spam filter and the world went into a tail spin!

I once did similar thing and nearly got fired, I blocked email with macros attachment and the financial department went nuts.
