      @DustinB3403

I dont want it to be crowd funding platform, but like we can create section for ideas we like and we can vote on them and we can help out and push them.

The idea is not to create alternative to kickstart but for us to rally and be movers and shakers, by all ML community moving as one entity.

    • Should ML start funding and supporting IT ideas and tech

      Hi,

      https://mangolassi.it/topic/18681/something-not-said-enough

This thread start me to get the idea of should we rally all and create some sort of bucket and fund IT ideas and stuff and create thread of them.

Like if we love something we can endorse it, get it going and use the power of the people here.

I dont know how much ML users are but like 2$ each to fund very neat idea we can move something and give it 1000$ in best case scenario, we can chat about the idea and make topic about it, also we can support internal users ideas if they will embrace the ML concept of sharing knowledge and accepting criticism and feedback.

Can we have new Category for this ? and voting system ? what do you think ?

About time Microsoft started to release those Updates that harms Windows 7 but not 10.

    • Should I bother to learn Windows Storage Spaces and what about Glances export?

I know 2 unrelated topics, but wanted your feedback.

      1. hearing good stuff about Windows Servers with Storage lately which is weird, should I bother installing and learning, its making buzz lately on 2016. Or should I stick with my gluster knowledge, I like to learn but i hate wasting time, and is it reliable and what filesystem does it use by default ?

      2. Anyone is using glances system monitoring tool with exporting and where do you export and do you have easy guide cause I am loving it, but there is many options to export too and tie too, so what is the better one with good web dashboard. (but you can run glances -w, okay but I would lose the data if i am not looking at it)

      thanks in advance

It is very good tool, but if you can tell him to also support write speeds not just read

NVM I saw this -t option but

diskplorer.py: error: option -t: invalid choice: 'test' (choose from 'read', 'write', 'randwrite', 'randread')

      2019-01-05 10_53_24-Fedora (Virt-Manager) - VMware Workstation.png

However I dont get what IOPS in Windows tests and Linux tests, I am used to see IOPS like 100-200 for HDD and 40,000+ for SATA SSDs
      ~100,000 for NVME

      https://www.samsung.com/semiconductor/minisite/ssd/product/consumer/850evo/

However it seems that maybe i dont know what I am looking for
      RANDOM WRITE (4KB, QD1)
      RANDOM WRITE (4KB, QD32)

I just want one base metric to give me good indicator

FYi this is VM on HDD

      @scotth

They are both great, but when you want to scale you want them on hardware and not VM that will handicap your hypervisor.

When you think about hardware and low power, there are alot of alterantives better than those 2 and cheaper, netgate provides PFsense but for 200$ ad the idea of desktop machine acting as router and using alot of power does not make sense to me.

However pi3 or better makes perfect sense, but guess what neither PFsense or OPN runs on ARM

II used hdparm, and this server or gui less, but I am not getting what I want, I want IOPS

like any windows utility notice the screenshot above SSD IOPS is ~55,000 R and 46000 Write

I want something that will allow me to get the IOPS in linux, those give me speed of file transfer but not IOPS

      SSD vs HDD (IOPS).png

      Hi

I need something simple to test Linux storage and extra points if I can bench NFS shares

I tried iostat, but this command
      iostat -d <your disk name> | grep <your disk name> | awk '{ print $2; }'

      from
      https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/225095/how-to-get-total-read-and-total-write-iops-in-linux

gives you very different variated results, I ran it got
      80
kept running it and those are results
      79
      78
      77
      76
      continuous decrease till 70
      reboot
then run and results starts from 448
      then continuous decrease

I want something stable and works like GeekBench for CPU

Scratch Pi it is still laggy with chromium due to low hardware.

However the NUC is bulky and I think overpowered and expensive, you need something in between.

I think there is many stronger Pi3, for tad extra cost, get one of those like Asus TinkerBoard

Why dont they create one giant hazardous label to fit all the products, and make it generic as possible.

Like this product contains hazardous chemicals.

it is not like someone actual reads that small fine print.

hehehe based on ubuntu 10 years, that came days after IBM purchased RedHat so it was more like Mark wanted to get attention. you really should not have added it to your factors.

That said anything with XFCE is good for me for desktops and LXDE for small form factors computers like Pi or thin clients.

    • PFsense hardware ?

I have 2 VM virtual PFsense (syncing to each other 1 master one slave) that i dislike in my new job.

I like PFsense, I think it has ton of options and smart and very good open source project.

I dislike the fact they are linked with our hypervisor, making troubleshooting longer and difficult.

So I want to propose something tangible.

But that thing installs only on AMD x64 and another project OPNsense has x86 option.

So how can I make them physical using small device, sadly Pi is out of the question. What other option I have.

@PhlipElder said in Windows 10 vs Windows 7:

We're flipping all of our clients over to Windows 10. It's a lot easier to maintain patch wise though the recent move to split-out .NET gives us a bit more complexity.

Whether Win7 or Win10 it's important to disable SMBv1. The following is PowerShell:

      # Disable on Windows 10
      Disable-WindowsOptionalFeature -Online -FeatureName smb1protocol -Restart

      # Check
      Get-WindowsOptionalFeature –Online –FeatureName SMB1Protocol

      # Check and Disable on Windows 7
      Get-Item HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters | ForEach-Object {Get-ItemProperty $_.pspath}

      # Disable SMBv1 on Windows 7
      Set-ItemProperty -Path "HKLM:\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\LanmanServer\Parameters" SMB1 -Type DWORD -Value 0 –Force
      Restart-Computer

      # Disable on Windows Server 2012 RTM
      # Check
      Get-SmbServerConfiguration | Select EnableSMB1Protocol

      # Disable
      Set-SmbServerConfiguration -EnableSMB1Protocol $false -Confirm:$False

What do you mean split out .NET ?

You can install latest version of .NET on both systems, and the only split .net done was in 4.0 they made one full and one for client, then they realized it us mistake. and never did it again.

That said, if your users really prefer Windows 7, likely this is interface related.

Consider getting a replacement shell for Windows 10 that makes it look like 7. Often that is all that they mean.

Or, if you have the flexibility, check out either Fedora with Cinnamon, or Mint Cinnamon for a Windows 7 like experience, but modern.

everyone here hates Windows 10 like the plague, but I love it. To me, It's simple and easy to use.

I don't hate it, but the longer I've been a Windows user, I've become more interested in other options.

"The more you use Windows, the more you want to stop using Windows."

I dual booted Xubuntu recently, and wanted to full switch in light of new STEAM proton API, which is amazing it makes all games on steam for windows magically work on Linux, just make sure to download and choose latest BETA proton api.

The bad news, while the API works, and fixes the game. Most modern games come with proprietary anti-cheat engine, and that simply does not allow the game to play on multiplayer.

So I either need to change my games . or do Graphic card pass through which is too much of hassle even for tinkerer like me. However having said that I should stop wasting my time with games...

      @G-I-Jones

well, you upgraded late, so most weird stuff got fixed. That said you dont have choice anymore, its not like you can
install Windows 7 on ryzen or latest intel CPU due to rare circumstance of chipset incompatibility according to MS that we have to take very seriously, something about USB drivers not being able to work on Windows 7 and MS wont provide the drivers for Win 7, cause it is very bad and outdated system, and you need to jump on Windows 10.
