My current city (Omaha) definitely gives me plenty of humidity - maybe not as much but I like it.

RE: What is Your Favourite Linux/BSD Desktop Distro - 2014 Q1
I tried moving us to a TS environment about 4 years ago - I couldn't get past the thin clients 'flashing' on websites that used Adobe Flash. When moving between screens on our EMR of the time the whole window would flash white before going to the next screen. I posted about it on SW... someone posted a reason why (can't recall now). Never had the problem when using a Windows machine as a terminal into the TS.
In the end it worked out since our current EMR strictly forbids TS.

@scottalanmiller how old of refurb PCs are you buying? or are they all factory defects that have been repaired, so not technically new, but no real age either?
We normally buy "off lease" so about three years old.
How much longer do you run them? We did this about 4 years ago, much to my surprise most of them are still in service. They all came with XP. All of them are slated to be replaced ASAP.

RE: If you could live anywhere....
I haven't traveled the world enough to really have a preferred place. I did enjoy Houston though. I need a place that is warmer more than cold but humidity is a must. Dry climates kill my asthma.

@scottalanmiller you're not wrong.
We tried looking at Open office several years ago (before we had Exchange). It was decided that converting all of our existing Office documents into Open Office files wouldn't be worth the efforts. many of our existing files had formatting issues that looked aesthetically bad.
I recently broached the topic again and was told that dealing with converting files received from outside sources wasn't worth the hassle, etc.
The worst part for us is the requirement to use IE for our LOB.

RE: This Is Genius!
Agreed, you'd have to use rare earth magnets. it would only work as long as your closet isn't super crowded. in crowded closets, you pull one hanger and suddenly you're pulling several hangers down.

RE: Compatible toner / ink vs. genuine toner / ink
We use a local vendor who offers free tech time if we purchase their toners. The price for the toners is about 15% more than what we normally see for non original toners, but the support has been shown to be worth it.

very cool. The industrial revolution is in super high gear.

RE: Who uses what Web Browser and Why
I use IE 8, IE 11 and Firefox. We have a app that only supports IE 8 so a few machines still are around for that app. IE 11 will be rolled out hopefully in Aug (or so I've been told).
Personally I use FF, been using it primarily for the past 2 years. Once I saw noticeable performance differences i converted instantly.

RE: NSA declares war on sysadmins
I'm fairly certain I'm on the list too, especially considering that I'm an arms owner as well.

I've never played on a MUD, what's involved?

RE: End User home router suggestions?
this is for a client to use at home. They don't want to maintain an extra computer at home for something like this. Simple appliance is all they want.

RE: What is Your Favourite Linux/BSD Desktop Distro - 2014 Q1
I've never used Linux as a desktop, If, maybe when, I need linux servers more I'll spend more time on it. Considering that almost all PCs (OK those you don't build yourself) come with Windows I don't really see the need to push for a linux desktop.

Here you go, another possible solution:

Agreed, why not buy an all in one product that has wireless built in? I suppose you could swap out drives, but what are the chances for that?

@jaredbusch picture is so seemless it makes it look like the forums are having problems - bleeding posts between threads.

RE: No reply button when replies are updated live
I've noticed this for days too.

RE: Compatible toner / ink vs. genuine toner / ink
@Dominica said:
@ajstringham I dunno, since buying a new printer is cheaper than buying the full set of genuine Brother toner, I think it might be worth it to try the generic toner.
The problem with this is that the printer always comes with a half or less full toner to begin with.

RE: Are you using IEAK to deploy required settings for IE?
Excuse me.. it's actually both - some features are in one, and the rest are in the other. so you need both GPP and IEAK
and just as maddening - it appears you can only edit GPP for IE 10+ on Windows 8+ or Server 2012+, adding the administrative templates to Server 2008R2 or Windows 7 does not give you the GPP portions.
