    • RE: Who's getting a new phone in 2016?

I may or may not get a new phone this year. I got my Note 4 in the Summer of 2014, a few months after moving in here... Note 4 has been awesome. The thing that sells the phone for me is the decent stylus that comes with the phone.

I'd probably consider the Google Nexus line of phones if I don't like what the Note 6 is going to be... But really, I need to start having problems with my Note 4 before I consider upgrading. It seems to be rock solid for me.

@quicky2g -- Those are some good numbers to see. It is important to note that if two ZT devices are on the same network subnet, then ZT will communicate directly over the LAN (the traffic will never leave your network). That's likely the reason for the good speeds.

Also are you doing your WAN test with UDP or TCP? (I think with UDP, you could see the higher rates, as UDP doesn't have to confirm delivery of the data).

So I've always wondered, why do so many people treat IT Staff (Technicians, Network/server admins and even directors) like crap? Is is because employees think these positions are below them or what?

      I can see that.

I also think, however, that they see the stereotypical IT guys too... They assume we hide behind our computers all day, playing games, and exist only to support them and only them. So when it takes us 3 hours to finally make it to their desk, they're wondering WTF took us so long and expect us to wave a magic wand and it work perfectly again.

I'm really liking how easy it is to setup. Just want to see some security review by a trusted security person before I go ahead and roll it out. Anyone seen a review on it from someone like Steve Gibson, Brian Krebs, or the like?

If you haven't read up in the FAQ yet, check it out here: https://www.zerotier.com/tech_faq.shtml -- especially the security section.

What kind of use case are you seeing for it?

I've got two locations, one with the worst "high-speed" internet you're likely to find outside of satellite (good riddance to satellite!) 1 vm host and 1 backup target at each location. Ether XenServer or ProxMox running on the servers. I'm thinking I'll be able to manage most things at both sites with a jumpbox vm. Maybe even make xrdp available as well, tho that would be painful with the DSL connection (756kb/250kb actual measured 600kb/300kb.)

ZeroTier must use some kind of compression so might help with your speed issues. I have 5mbps upload at home. Did an upload test with iPerf between my house and my work office and saw 5mbps with Hamachi:

      0_1452090858124_hamachi.png

Did the same test with ZeroTier between the same endpoints:

      0_1452090880951_zerotier.png

That makes me go "What is going on here, something is not right."

I'm going to tag @adam-ierymenko and see what his take on that is. He's one of the ZT Guys.

The one ERP system we have (it was written in FoxPro......) is hard coded to map to the V drive. Even if you map it to something else and tell the program in the options that it's under the other drive letter and the dialog box accepts it, it still won't work.

Yepp. That sounds like what I'm waging war against... Except in the Windows Registry... Basically they used hard coded paths to files instead of %userprofile% .... So when user1 logs in, it sets up and configures and works fine. However, it freaks out when user2 logs in because It can't access User1's files.

I severely dislike UTM devices. I prefer things to be on their own box.

There's something to be said for that. Out of 2 UTM appliances (Fortigate and commercial smoothwall setup), I was never able to enable all of the features or traffic would come to a screeching halt -- even if the boxes were "appropriately sized" for our network.

It's been bad but I also have a completely crappy attitude about it today. I had a co-worker demand that I come in. They texted me at 8:15 AM and expected me to be there by 8:30 AM with no notice. Then I get there to prepare her laptop and she's not there. I text her "where are you? I'm here." and she said she borrowed an iPad from the vocational department. I'm like, gee thanks for letting me know I didn't have to come in 30 minutes early unshowered. Totally appreciate it.

Urgh. Yeah. At least you can come and vent on here and not seriously injure the person who is causing to need beer-thirty to come early.

I was also working until 10:00 PM to resolve this file server issue we were having with the Virtual Disk Service so I already felt like I was just here. I'll get over it

This is the way it was done before SQL Server added DAG, I think. My first two Failover Clusters did this with SQL Server 2005, and 2008. We never had any problems with it... Go figure. The SQL Servers in both instances are backed by a SAN, so there's no need to have two copies of the files anywhere.

Only problem is that you rely on the SAN. You have a single point of failure even after all of that work. If it is a super awesome SAN (EMC, HDS) this can work pretty well. But generally even a six figure SAN doesn't deliver as much as DAG would here.

sigh I really gotta update my definition of SAN to industry standards)... I am at a new employer, but we have a pair of highly available redundant Nimble SAN units (Network Raid 1,Two switches for each, two fiber paths for each, two UPSes for each, and Natural Gas Generators for each).
