@RojoLoco Y'all sound like my kinda peoples 🙂 real world, none of that straight-laced academia stuff

eh, I did really well in school and still don't consider myself to be that smart

Book smarts can be helpful... But nothing beats honest-to-God real world experience... and that goes for pretty much anything, I think.

    • ZeroTier and DHCP

So in light of some of the other ZeroTier discussions I've had... I figured I would post here and tag @adam-ierymenko with a question...

I have a problem (I can make this an Issue on GitHub if you want)... My ZeroTier controller is located on a cloud hosted server. I figured I would try and use my own home's internal DHCP server (it is also my DC) at my house to assign IP addresses and DNS to all of my ZT Devices.

So I installed the ZT Client on my server and then set ZT's v4AssignMode to dhcp. I set a static IP address on the DHCP Server (192.168.251.1) and configured it to give out IP addresses in 192.168.251.100-150.

Any ZeroTier device that is also on the LOCAL Lan (local to the DHCP server, which also serves my home network)... will successfully register a DHCP address over the ZT Adapter.

Any device that is NOT on my local Lan, such as my phone (with the android client) with wireless off, or my day job computer (college in town) does NOT get a ZT IP address.

However, if I manually assign IP addresses to them, they work fine. Any ideas of things that I can troubleshoot? My setup looks like this:

      ztController (192.168.251.2*--V
      /----------- home network -> DHCP Server (192.168.10.11,192.168.251.1*)
      internet------|
      |----------- Office Computer (cannot get a dhcp lease)
------------Phone (wireless off, or at another location, cannot get a DHCP lease)

      • IPs manually assigned to these devices.

I have manually set my v4AssignMode back to ZT so I can at least remain connected to my ZT Network and look devices up by IP address.

@scottalanmiller I do actually want you to get a mojito though. @Dashrender secretly hates @JaredBusch and makes him drink fireball. I'm actually your friend

I love mojitos. And fireball. And straight whiskey. And scotch. And gin. And rum. Even tequila.

If he starts talking about running somewhere, y'all better cut him off. If he hops on the floor buffer and starts trying to drive it around, somebody'd better get some video!

I would contact the ISPs for each site and report the problem and escalate up their food chains until you get a network engineer working with you or the problem is resolved.

because it must be, because sometime we want to restore due to a virus took over the whole system

I haven't had to do a full system-restore yet, but I would assume you would be able to pick and choose what to restore. If you are restoring because you got hit by a virus, I would assume you want to restore everything anyway.

@art_of_shred I'm still all young and spry, and we are doing family members a favor by clearing out some trees they want gone and all too... I actually enjoy short meetings with my old friend Manuel Labor. My Pops enjoys it too... Just gotta keep a can of WD-40 around to keep his joints from freezing up... I think he's related to Tin Man.

Can you run pellets in a wood burning stove, or does it take a special kind of stove for that? Mine has an automatic blower and all on it when there is power at the house. If there's no power and it is the dead of winter, then we're stuck sleeping next to it at night for warm air, lol.

Crashplan would probably be a good fit for this as well. At $6 per computer per month, you get cloud backups and unlimited storage and file versioning as well (double check with Crashplan on how long you can keep file versions!).

This is one of the areas where Aetherstore would really shine, I think. I'm currently using it as a backup target for my lab at work, and it seems to do pretty good (and I have a crappy lab setup, lol).

How are you educating your clients?
What advice are you giving them?
What do you do if a client becomes a victim of CryptoWall?
In what scenario, if any, would you advise a client to just pay the ransom?

I'm only half serious about my answers here... depends on the user and how many times they have been warned...

      1. Don't click attachments in email.
      2. Don't click attachments in email! Have good backups!
      3. Restore from most recent backups.
      4. None.
