@MattSpeller @dafyre I do have a degree. It is only so I can get an interview. Please don't take this as me being harsh either but there are other ways to learn IT and get skills other than a four year university. With the over inflated cost of a four year university I just don't see the value, don't even mention being a well rounded individual, I can become well rounded on my own and don't need that spoon fed to me either. I have used absolutely 0% of what was taught to me at school in my career in IT. Maybe the program I was in was absolute crap and has tainted my view, but this is just my opinion on going to a four year school for an IT career.

You share that opinion with several of us here. 🙂

I've upgraded my 11.03 instance to the 12 beta. It works great! All of the plugins that I use for it do work, and I even got the Collabora Online docker image to work with it as well!

The video chat does work well. I haven't found where to test the regular chat yet.

In a default install the username is admin, and the password is blank.

On some systems the username is admin and the default password is zabbix.

The skill to handle users, interpret what they need from what thy say they need, and customer service are important in my opinion too!

Yes, but are isolated to one very specific role within IT, not a general skill across the industry.

By and large, I agree with @NattNatt . I don't think they're limited to one very specific role in IT at all. You use those skills more in some roles than others, but you'll need at least some modicum of these skills, no matter what branch of IT you get into.

Best analogy for the way IT works I've ever heard. IT can be a bit like playing poker in the risk / reward department.

You try something to improve things, and if it goes over well, then IT wins poker chips (thus causing the users/management to like IT and trust them more).

If your attempt does not go over well, then IT loses poker chips (thus causing the users/management to begin to dislike and distrust IT more).

After hearing that analogy I could see it very much in play at the various places I worked.

Excited about Cybrary... They finally added some closed captioning for the hearing impaired... It's not all of their courses, but they have a few that are done... If you haven't heard of them or never checked them out... It's free training for IT folks... http://cybrary.it

we are striving for excellence but just catering to politics to avoid getting blamed

This is probably a huge portion of IT in all reality, but that portion of IT would not be considered an IT Practioner by your or our standards @scottalanmiller. I think a lot of people are groomed to be that way by upper management. If I weren't invited here I'd be a very different IT employee. That's a pretty profound statement I think.

When I get blamed for something, I wear it like a badge of honor or a battle scar depending on the circumstances. Good or bad, if it's my fault, I own it.

You are an IT practitioner. I'm talking about what is normal in the world not what is normal here.

Even outside of IT... The world needs more folks to accept the blame for their crap instead of trying to push it off on somebody else.

My Gramps was heavily active on the HAM radio waves until he got cancer at 80-something years old. He worked during the first Gulf War, and a bit during the second one. His call sign was W4BKK if you ever happened to chat with him, lol. My Pops got the call sign after grampa passed away, so we can keep it in the family, lol.

After I get my ears turned on later this month, I gotta brush up on my Morse Code.

      Surprise surprise. . .

AMD processors are affected by a patch meant for Intel systems. . . and Microsoft is mums-the-world about the whole thing. . .

Not sure why Microsoft couldn't detect if you are using Intel or AMD processors and then turn off when its a AMD processor.

That will be the logical step 🙂

Microsoft involved. Logic does not exist in that world.

Well, my first interview is Tuesday, even before my final pay check is due 🙂

      Congrats. Doing what?

Branch IT support for a Fortune 500 company in Columbus, OH. Lots of opportunity for promotion from within the company. Also, the same company my brother-in-law works for, so it was easy to get my name in front of the proper people instead of having to get past HR first.

Knowing people helps... My first ever IT job I got of my own recognizance, turns out I was friends with the guy's kid, ha ha ha.

Shipping giant Maersk was forced to reinstall its entire IT environment in 10 days to recover from the NotPetya malware in June last year.

“We had to install 4000 new servers, 45,000 new PCs, 2500 applications, and that was done in a heroic effort over 10 days.
