No doubt. I waited too long before hiring. I've been working 7 days a week about 17 hours per day... Not fun.

Yeah, probably too long. But the longer you do it, the more time you have to bank the money to pay the next person with less risk.

Yeah, you have to either be prepared to get a loan to cover their salary, or have it in the bank already. You might find your own salary going down, possibly significantly, while you continue to grow the business.

Yes, I saved enough that if 0 dollars come in I would still be able to operate for over a year.

@dustinb3403 No, trust me... she was serious... AND she asked that AFTER being in the computer on Teamviewer.

I'm about to hang up and call back and see if I get someone else to answer the phone.

If she asks who you use for your TCP/IP, tell her AOL

      LOL! That's awesome!

Sorry. I let out my cruel

Don't worry I won't tell her you said that! 🤣

    • Failed Global Drive

I have a client that has a RAID 5 array with 3 drives in the array and 1 Global Spare. The server suddenly started running very slowly so I checked the RAID array. I have a pre-fail condition on the Global Spare. Since the global spare is not in use right now, would that have an impact on performance?

    • Adding another NIC to Hyper-V

I have a server with 8 GB Network cards. It is currently setup with only 1 NIC in use. Physical NIC shared with Hyper-V virtual NICs

      It's a physical server with 2 Hyper-V machines.

In order to get better network speed is it going to help to add another NIC if ultimately it's going into the same switch?

Tagging @CCWTech as we are discussing this. This sums up the VLAN for VoIP issues..

      0_1523121953180_nnca869.jpg

I love it! I'm tempted to send this to him!! What an idiot.

While this is totally true from the protocol point of view, the entire VLAN getting priority over all other traffic not in the VLAN is better than no QoS at all.

@scottalanmiller likes to neglect to mention this in his zeal.

802.1Q does provide QoS. Yes, it prioritizes everything, but any network with VLANs configured properly will still see a benefit to the traffic within the prioritized VLAN.

Under normal circumstances, the amount of non RTP traffic in the VLAN is negligible and honestly not relevant to any discussion outside of theoretical mental exercises on 100% best possible prioritizaiton discussions.

Now that said, I never recommend using a VLAN for voice in the first place, because that is not the purpose of a VLAN. I always recommend setting up proper DSP tag based QoS as a primary resolution.

I was arguing with another tech... He made the statement that he sets up VLANs for all VOIP clients for better performance.

Even before seeing Scott's video on the subject. I told the tech he was up in the night and that setting up a VLAN isn't done for performance... I was called 'unprofessional' and a 'goof' for not doing VLANs for all my clients VOIP systems... After seeing Scott's video, I could see that everything I was saying to the guy was true. The tech responded by posting a link to a CISCO article covering very large enterprise environments. He's dealing with offices of 20 computers or less and can't understand why SMB would be any different than a significantly large enterprise network.

He's adding equipment and services at a premium price. Ripping off his clients. Very unethical.

    • Business WIFI Planning and Deployment

When putting a new WIFI system into a building, how do you plan how many WIFI AP's you need and where they go?

I have a 1 level business that has WIFI right now in their server room that isn't doing the job. It's not the best place to put it, but since it's a Meraki Router With WIFI that's where it ended up.

I want to make sure I minimize cost, have a solution that works and that as they move laptops throughout the building will automatically hand off to another WIFI AP smoothly w/o interruption. Central management would be nice as well. Meraki has their access points but they are pricey. We also need guest WIFI. There will be about 20 clients on the private network and 15 on the guest (we make employee's use guest for their personal devices)

      So, 2 questions here:

1 - How do you determine how many AP's you need and where you need them?
2 - What brand/solution do you use the most that won't break the bank?

It's a gas main break right?

Isn't the fire department capable of capping or cutting off the feed?

No, the gas company does that. FD is not qualified to do that. There are not easy shut off valves, often times they need to excavate nearby and clamp the gas line down.

      Ugh, good luck.

It came back up on it's own while I was on the phone with the tech. (The tech did nothing to make that happen.)

Then he said well it's working so it there anything else I can do for you? (I wanted to say "anything else? What the hell did you do for me." But, I just said thanks and hung up... I'm not sure why I have higher expectations when I call.

    • Network setup - Hyper-V

      0_1513971948316_Capture.JPG

      I have 2 Intel GB NIC's Teamed together for 2 GB. I have a Hyper-V network adapter that is used for 2 VM's. VM1 - DC/DNS/DHCP, VM2-Application server

I have some thin clients and they RDS into the apps server as well as some traditional desktops that just run the application (a veterinary software that is a flat file database) over the network.

I have set this up 30-40 times before but only 1 other time using teaming.

The application is fast on the RDS session but very slow over the network. The previous server (a 10 year old server that was entry level) was running faster than the new server that has 64 GB Ram, 10K RPM Drives in RAID 10 when running over the network.

Am I not setting this up correctly?

just got my third "Hey come talk to us about a job" in the last 2 weeks.

      Enjoy being wanted. 😄

it kinda came out of no where too.
I just getting a LinkedIN wasn't a bad idea eh?

LinkedIn communications tend to be better than stuff from Monster, etc. The latter usually results in calls about developer positions, while my resume has zero development experience listed.

The random "I got your resume off the internet and was wondering if you wanted a job 6 hours away that pays a quarter of what you're looking for" connections are the best.

My gf is currently job seeking, she gets lots of those. The other hilarious ones are "work from home, $3k / week, just for receiving and unboxing shipments!" They don't give any company name or location... best case scenario is that you're unboxing / reshipping stuff from overseas sites like Wish. Worst case would be you're receiving shipments of drugs at your house.

@CCWTech that picture is the first hit for "real estate mongol" on Google.

Nice. I wish I could say I'm surprised. They are all over the place here.

I've heard rumors that those (and signs like them) are related to trafficking. I haven't done any research beyond those claims though.

Not that I have ever heard. The are multi-level marketing / pyramid scams but not trafficking. (I am a retired LEO [20 years on the job])

In fact the whole human trafficking stats are very overstated. Bust a college girl doing escorting and it's called trafficking.

    • Possible Deceptive Advertising Claims by Covetrus

Browsing Facebook I came across an advertisement for Covetrus (Maker of Veterinary Software) that stated 60% of companies that experience data loss close within six months.

The ad neglects to site a source or even explain what kind of data loss. Did Marge from HR delete a photo from the annual company picnic? Did ransomware wipe out the CEO's desktop?

      Clipboard - January 27, 2020 6_38 AM.png

So I asked in a post for their source.

They send me this link: https://www.inc.com/joe-galvin/60-percent-of-small-businesses-fold-within-6-months-of-a-cyber-attack-heres-how-to-protect-yourself.html?fbclid=IwAR2POu0JO9eyQuJiw9S66cf_iEFEc8kBT1vlAgsMXWFMantVn0EVDFu5Ndo

The link is by the Chief Research Officer of a company called Vistage. Vistage as it turns out is a company that sells CEO mentoring/training/coaching to other companies to help them succeed.

To view the article you click on a link and put in all of your personal info into Vistage's website.

Once you do that, you are scheduled with an online meeting with Vistage about how to become a member of the organization and receive services from them.

(Bob Loblaw has a 10:30 appointment tomorrow with them)

Such a shame that many people will see their ad and not even think twice about if any of it is even true.

Just my rant for a Monday morning!
