Always the thought that gets you.

It's probably similar to other disasters, no? How many times does an entire building burn down?

      Awesome, thanks.

That's a Google thing I always forget to do.

It's just an extension of normal RAID 10 math.

You have a writeup on normal RAID 10 math? 😉

I always thought RAID 5 was king. But I know it's 10 now. (Except with SSD which is OK.) I think I saw an article of yours. But it might have all just been forum chatter.

RAID 1 is the safest possible RAID level. RAID 10 is many RAID 1 mirrors in a single RAID 0 stripe. So the best RAID 10 is one with the smallest possible RAID 0 stripe. A RAID 1 is a RAID 10 where the RAID 0 stripe has only one member.

You have a writeup on here on that? I know (I am sure I Know) you do, just looking for a link. 🙂

How many takes did it get to get the "full mouth" just right?

That's really for those that need more than 6TB of usable only. If you need 6TB or less, the ioSafe 214 / Synology 215+ are where it is at.

Then just go with Raid 1, since it is 2 bay?

That's the only option, so yes. 🙂

And that is .... OK? (I know RAID 10 is the king here.)

Is there actually a difference? I haven't looked yet. Too much chatter on this forum to use any other browser windows.

Could go for a good BBQ. Our "driving kids around" schedule is filled with hoagies, granola bars, and nothingness.

@BRRABill A couple of years ago, we did a full network overhaul... the full-time staff, and student workers spent every spare moment for about 3 months making patch cables, lol.

That basically what I did the entire summer as a student worker. Bleh.

Met my wife that summer though, so ... all good.

In my college days (circa 1993-1994) I spent a whole summer rewiring token ring connectors. My fingers were never so sore.

It really depends on your requirements and how much data you have.

      Couple hundred GB, max.

      The 415+ was mentioned earlier.

      Exactly!

Also, did you say all the devices are basically the same, except for processor? I'd love to get my hands on a cheapo one to play with.

Star Wars/Spaceballs mentions are a good way to bump up the reply rate in one's thread.

Star Wars talk is appropriate today, right?

Not always the best, speed isn't. More learning to do I do.

Because it costs more, uses more electric and wears out faster. It's not purely about money vs. speed in the terms of straight acquisition cost.

But wouldn't that good a good tradeoff in a NAS that is serving data?

I see what you mean (from your article) of an archive system.
