RE: If You Have to Ask the Question...
@s.hackleman said
I see where he is coming from. Asking a question on this forum can be intimidating. For me personally I love it, I like being proven wrong, I like going to head to head. I have never won a debate with @scottalanmiller, and I like that, I learn from it. From what I have gathered in life a vast majority of people don't like this feeling, and take it personally.
Same here.
In fact, there was a little bit where I slowed in asking questions, because of the BS some people posted against me.
But that didn't last long. I said "F IT" and just posted what I wanted to. I'm here to learn and grow, and if people don't like it, they can ignore me.
Most people here are happy to help.

Storage Question
First off: hello everyone! (First post!)
So, I did a bunch of storage research before buying my latest server. The server I eventually ended up with was a DELL T320, with the PERC H310 card. I outfitted it with (2) 500GB 7.2K SATA drives in a RAID 1 array. The thinking was I was going to put a 2012 hypervisor on that array, and then use my own SSD drives for the VMs. This server will be used as a DC, and also either a moderate use file server or email server for a 20 person SMB.
I worked directly with Kingston, and received some trial SSD drives (KC300). The drives work, but as many here have probably seen, they constantly flash amber, throw up a lot of errors in Server Administrator, and of course provide no SMART monitoring or advanced warnings. I'm a little nervous at some point this is going to come back and bite me.
So now I am rethinking this whole thing, and where I should go from here. Even though you cannot buy them like this from DELL, I've been told the server can run SATA and SAS concurrently, so I think I have a lot of options. This server is new so data is not a concern.
Would love to hear any thoughts about my situation, or answers to the following questions.
Thanks in advance!
-
Am I nuts to consider these third party SSDs without any monitoring or predictive failure?
-
Would it make sense to trash the 7.2K drives, and just buy (4) SAS 10K drives for in there and make one big RAID 10 array?
-
Considering what I already have and our requirements, would it just make sense to buy a few more 7.2K drives and make a RAID 10 array out of them? Is there a huge performance difference between those two arrays? (7.2K vs. 10K both in a RAID 10.)
-
Sub question: where did 15K SAS drives go? DELL doesn't really offer them any more.
-
Do people buy the PERC H310? Seems like the H710 is mentioned a lot.

MS Licensing Question 11-6-1830
In my journey to enlightenment via MS licensing, I figure I'll have more stuff pop into my head. Just such a thing just happened.
I figured I'd post the time of the thought in the topic title, and separate the thoughts into threads.
THE QUESTION:
I know with an OEM license you are not allowed to image a Windows desktop So, no regular imaging, or no BMR to new hardware. Are you allowed to image the hard drive to a new hard drive for the same system to swap out the drive? Such as when upgrading to a SSD?

Graylog Discovery
When trying to figure out why my Graylog was not working correctly, I think i figured it out, and might have also solved the issue we were discussing last week.
https://www.mangolassi.it/topic/10244/syslog-forwarding-for-xenserver/86When you install the appliance version, the time zone is set to UTC. So, when you are searching, looking for the recent entries that should be trickling in, nothing shows up.
I stumbled across them in the input section, and realized it might be a time zone issue. And sure enough after some more Linux tutelage by @DustinB3403 and a reboot of the Graylog VM, sure enough, everything was working perfectly.
So if you are having issues having anything appear in Graylog, make sure your time zone is set correctly.
sudo timedatectl set-timezone America/New_York

Crashplan Pro Issue
Ran into a little issue with Crashplan Pro (or Business, whatever it is called now) today.
I have a user who has not been backed up in 9 days. After confirming the machine was online, I logged into his machine remotely to take a look. The CPP client was not connecting to their server.
I live chatted with them, and found this out...
CPP: "Thanks. Give me a minute to look into it from my end. I am thinking this is related to an issue with ojne of our storage servers, but I want to confirm.
Yes, it looks like this is on our end. This archive is stored on https://dqh-sea.crashplanpro.com. We are in the process of moving all archives off of this serrver. This process will still take some time to complete, but once the archive has moved, the backup would resume."ME (Paraphrased): Uh, that's ridiculous for a real-time backup service. What if there is data loss?
CPP: "I agree. I would recommend setting up a local backup while we are having this issue. https://support.codeβ¦acking_Up_To_An_External_Drive
ME: Ranting about how bad this is for users backing up data.
CPP: "We are in the process of moving all archives on that storage node to other servers. This process takes time to complete.
I can understand your frustration. If I had a way to move this process along faster, I would.
I can understand that. It did appear that this storage node was causing issues for many other users as well.ME: "Surely there was an e-mail or something to alert users that they have no good backups for over a week now?"
CPP: "This is an issue that is still under investigation, and no email was sent"
So anyway, if you use CPP, and you are having backup issues, you might want to give them a call.

RE: Viability of Samsung EVO 850 SSD on Dell PERC H710P
This is one of the topics that brought me to this forum, indirectly.
In my research (and real-world experience testing Kingston SSDs in a DELL T320) it is very hit or miss, with the hit ratio being far higher.
It seems to "work", but as @todd-at-xByte mentioned you are running totally blind. My fear was also some sort of "issue" down the road.
DIRECTLY ( ) because of this forum I've been looking into the SSD options from xByte. That is going to be my next test. It's is a little more pricey than the consumer SSDs, but not as bad as the other enterprise-level SSDs I have seen, and certainly much much cheaper than DELL direct.
There is still the question of using non-DELL equipment in a DELL, but others will chime up on that.
