      Hi @Danp

I have a similar thread going you might find interesting.

      http://www.mangolassi.it/topic/6715/10-pc-office-data-storage-recommendations/127

It'll really depends on what you are looking to do with it.

Take a look at the other thread. It might answer your questions!

No, I get what you are saying.

We have AD, but we've had it for 10+ years and it originated from when we were a 60+ person company.

That's why I said that the price for a full company is just $120. It is so low, only a single person business would not do it automatically. It literally borders on the crazy for companies of any size to even contemplate any other option.

Now I think the levels of MS licensing have me confused again.

      What is VL exactly?

but as imaging rights for a full company are only about $120, it doesn't take much IT time saving to justify.

      Is that per machine?

    • RE: 10 PC Office Data Storage Recommendations

Couple more questions on this NAS.

      1. I know drive capacity and performance capacity was mentioned. Obviously space drives drive capacity (pun intended) but what drives performance? The number of users? The types of files? Both?

      2. Does anyone use encryption on this? I could see this being a nice fit for smaller shops (accountant, law firm, doctor) who need encryption. I know there is a performance drain, but I'm imagining on a Word file it's not a big issue. A huge video file might be another animal.

      3. The 214 and 215+ were both mentioned. Any reason to go with the 215+ over the 214? I have such a hard time making these kinds of decisions!

      4. How do you access files on this remotely? It looks like it has a VPN add-on?

      5. Why are there so many media-type add-ons for this thing? Do people typically do that in a business setting?

In the interest of reliability and compatibility, we opted to only support enterprise level SSDs. We actually only recently supported non-Dell drives because of those same reasons. We started talking with Edge and found a partner who would co-developer firmware to limit the risk to our customers. If Dell makes a firmware change, we didn't want our customers to experience any issues with their drives.

That what made me reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally nervous about non-DELL drives.

Not that anything would happen, but the last thing you need is some change form DELL and then your drives stop working, or booting.

Total BS that they do that, but whatever. It's their company and there are other options.

Exactly why I decided to go with them. Or at least get a demo unit from them, I should say.

And yellow exclamation point in OMSA be damned!

The answer here should be to move those critical data-storing apps elsewhere. To a server, to a hosted site... whatever. A high quality VPS starts at $5/mo. If the system isn't worth $5, it's not critical in the least.

Recommendation, for future storage ... in my brain?

I think this may have been missed in all the back and forth. 🙂
