My question was more: how did you test a failing drive would do that? It's more out of curiosity, since I have no way of testing that.

Also, when the drive is failing, I don't think it typically takes it offline. Othewise, why would there be a failing state? Failing is typically the "hey dude replace this drive ASAP" type warning.

      Are the EDGE drives different?

The amber light for Edge normally reads "non-Dell drive detected", that's all.

      What do you mean?

I was under the impression OMSA said "non-DELL drive" but the lights were green on the drive itself, and only went amber if there was an issue.

That's why I was wondering how they tested it works on a failing drive.

Cooperstown was never on the list... People tried but didn't even make the list.

That was in my brain for some reason.

My knowledge of NY geography is just a tick below my knowledge of Microsoft licensing.

Are you near the Amtrak line? The Rochester venues, which are far more numerous than the Niagara ones (the short list is a bunch of locations between the cities) are all right by the train station. Super easy way in and out for people living along the right corridors.

I live less than 5 minutes from the Trenton train station.

If it's still in the originally picked area (Cooperstown?) I can make that. It's a pretty short ride for me. (4 hours I think.)

I know your drives are compatible with the DELL servers (minus the yellow triangle in OMSA).

How did you guys confirm they will flash amber when failing?

It's not about them making it easier, it is about you choosing between paying for the easy way or putting up with the inconvenient way. An easy way is available if you want to license it.

I am learning that is the way of licensing. πŸ™‚

      Er, Microsoft licensing.

The Windows 10 upgrade makes no sense to me, and causes a ton of extra work.

There has to be an easier way for them to do it.

You can't do a clean install of 10. You have to upgrade to 10 manually first for it to register the machine. THEN you can do a clean install using the key they give you.

Perhaps that is what he means?

THOUGH ... if a am technically allowed to run Windows 10, and get a VL key for 1 (buying 1 Windows 10 Upgrade VL), could I just go that route? Or is that what you are saying?

OK, so I think we are fine there on the desktop side. It is NOW safe to move to SA.

DESKTOP: is it even worth discussing SA, or is it too complicated? Maybe a high level overview, or the Cliff Notes version?

Since it is so inexpensive, why doesn't everyone just pay for it? πŸ˜‰

My point being if a 200 PC company wants this and can get it for under $500 ... why don't just allow people to image?

So imaging and potential cost+ease (key managment, no retail boxes) for upgrading from older OSes.

That's the reason companies move to VL.

Mostly. Though companies will also buy it to upgrade computers such as from XP Pro to Windows 7 Pro.

And that is because the VL Win7Pro (in that scenario) license is generally the cheapest way to go?

Yes. Because the machines are already legally Windows 10 Pro via OEM. You may now use imaging services to create and deploy a clean image on all 10 devices.

If it is so inexpensive, why the heck don't they just allow that with OEM?

So, if I had 100 machines, same thing? 1 license, and I get imaging rights?

AND ... that's the main reason people go to VL? To get imagine rights?
