If wireless only, how are you going to be able to ensure that they can be serviced? You can't expect them to build a tower on their residence. .

WISPs generally do LoS surveys. It's not a new thing for the industry.

No I get that, but you still need an antenna on the residence.

Which if it's only so many feet tall likely won't work.

So the question is are most of the homes in the area relatively clear to be able to see the planned tower?

It's Texas. So most likely a large number of homes will be in LoS of any high point. This isn't the Adirondacks or the Catskills.

Yup. West Texas, this would be a piece of cake as there is hardly nothing out there to get in the way. East Texas, Trees maybe go up 30 ft and the land is generally flat with some hills and valleys.

What area of West Texas? I am in Midland/Odessa area.

@fateknollogee said in Just need a basic Switch - to act as a Hub:

@DustinB3403 Why are you calling it a "hub"?

Because there is no switching taking place. The devices simply ask for a dhcp address, and go. All switches are hubs, so a basic unmanaged switch.

There is always switching taking place on a switch. All switches operate on layer 2. Hubs have no switching and operate at layer 1, so they are two different things.

@dustinb3403 You don't want a USG. Period. Ever.

      It is a gimped ERL.

For personal home use, buy the ERX.

      Ok thanks

@jaredbusch said in Ubiquiti Security Gateway:

@dustinb3403 To directly answer the last demo question, no. But if you have a UNiFi Controller, all you have to do it poke around the screens there a bit.

The controller lacks a lot of functionality without the ERX or security Gateway.

On a side note, the controller insists on needing a USG to enable certain functionality, does the ERX fill that requirement?

The only functionality the controller is missing without a USG is Deep Packet Inspection.

@scottalanmiller it’s a guess based on a reddit thread I found, They said in beta it was priced at $500 and in the past beta pricing was half of what retail ended up being.
