Maybe it goes even further and they (the poster) are thinking "well that's not MY environment... here's my environement:" which gets replied to with a thread describing a nearly identical setup to their own.
Such a common issue that I wrote about it...
Hah! That is awesome!

Encrypted flash drives
I need an option that allows for PIN access (I know it's less secure than a complex password). Because Bitlocker to Go only allows for complex passwords. Any recommendations? Something not as expensive as, say, IronKey.

RE: Encrypted flash drives
@aaronstuder VeraCrypt does PIN? Awesome, thanks. Not sure why I didn't think to use that, I recommend it to a bunch of people.

MDT 2012 - PowerShell error
Getting the following error when launching MDT for the first time:
PowerShell is required to use the Deployment Workbench. Please install PowerShell then relaunch Deployment Workbench.
I've already RemoteSigned for the current user, I'm using Server 2012 R2 with PowerShell 3.0 ... Thoughts? Here's a couple links I tried already:

OSX Server - Free?
I thought OSX Server went from $20, to free. I see now that it is $20 but thought Apple had released something saying it was being given away. I know new OSX desktop installs are now free, so maybe I got those mixed up...
Did I miss something, or has Server remained at $20 for some time?

Server 2012 R2 - PowerShell upgrade
I tried upgrading from 3 to 4 over the weekend. When I try to install the WMF 4.0 multipkg.msu from the following link, I get this error:
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=40855
Then, I went through these steps to install the cert:
right-click the file and select properties.
On "Digital Signatures" the tab, select the "Microsoft Corporation" entry and click "Details"
In the "Digital Signature Details" dialog, click "View Certificate"
In the "Certificate" dialog, click "Install Certificate..."
In the "Certificate Import Wizard" dialog, select "Local Machine" (though current user might work, didn't use it, so I can not attest to it) and click "Next"
Select the "Place all certificates in the following store" option and click "Browse"
In the "Select Certificate Store" dialog, select "Trusted Publishers" and click "Ok"
Back in the "Certificate Import Wizard" click "Next"
You should now be at the "Completing the Certificate Import Wizard" step of the "Certificate Import Wizard" ... click "Finish"
You should get "Import was successful"
Tried reinstalling the package, received the same error. What the heck am I missing to install v4? I already went into server manager as some other thread recommended to make sure features for 3.5 and 4.5 were installed. Not all of them are checked, but the ones that are defaulted with a server 2012 r2 installation are.

RE: Server 2012 R2 - PowerShell upgrade
Major oversight on my part. I overlooked the fact I downloaded the Windows6.1 (Win7) copy instead of Windows8 copy of the msu. Whoops.

DFS nightmare.
We have two file servers that are setup with DFS. I've tested replication, and ran some diagnostics but everything shows as healthy.
Under our \namespace\fileshares, we have things like \Users, \Software, etc. For many people during random times of random days, all the shares will disappear, but they can still see \Users. If you click on \Users, you'll see only your name, which is how it should be. I'm redoing the permissions for this folder because then when it stops acting up, users can traverse over to other user folders (but not see their documents, they can merely see that there are other user folders).
There's not just an issue with \Users, it goes deeper. Checking the permissions on \Fileshares, I don't see any glaring issues. Domain Users have read permissions so they can get to \Software, but even a domain admin sometimes will see that share disappear. If you map a drive directly to one of the servers, everything is fine. So you would think there is an issue with DFS.
Anyone?

Exchange users & VPN
I have a few users that have to be on the VPN to be able to connect their Outlook client at home. If they jump off the VPN, they can't get email. This happened to me for the first 3 months but didn't care, one day it just started connecting. There's nothing different about these users compared to other users... Same groups, same OU, everything.
Any ideas?

Help... Ubuntu 11.10
I was told late yesterday to gather credentials today from a dev that was getting fired. Before I got to work, the dev was fired. Totally locked out of a 11.10 Ubuntu box (CLI only). It only has local authentication. Any way to get into this box?

Or if you follow that Ubuntu specific link that you have, do that and select the "root" shell prompt option.
I got the pw changed, but how does one enter single user mode in this install? I don't see it anywhere... These are the only options I have.

Migrated away from what?
I cannot legally discuss that part...
can you discuss why you can't discuss it?
It would put the company I work for in a bad spot should someone run across this thread.

I could discuss it, but if the company got in trouble and it linked back to me leaking the information, I'd lose my job. Pretty harsh state to work in if you work in the private sector. You can get fired for anything here.
It really comes down to poor ethics over a decade. I have been here since August and we finally got things on a more ethical level.

Bet that feels good!
Sorry, no. It's more of a wash than feeling bad or good.
The compromise was to purchase Skype for Business after I had setup RocketChat & OpenFire inside of a week. That got shut down in about 10 seconds after it was decided we'd use SfB. Two of us threatened to quit if they didn't make a move, just so happened that that move was toward SfB.

Either OpenFire or RocketChat would have worked out great. Way better than SfB in fact.
do you only need a chat client?
OK I see what you're saying here. yeah a customer of mine a long time ago was illegally using Office. I told them that they had to buy 10+ copies of Office or my company would no longer support them. I'm sure they read between the lines that an audit would be coming too. They quickly, though complainingly, pulled out the checkbook.
See I just couldn't allow that to happen. I have pirated software when I was younger and dumber. I guess as you get older you get a little more ethical and think of the repercussions... Would it really be worth it if you got hit with an enormous fine? No, probably not. It could drive someone into financial issues, and with kids that is just dumb (I don't have kids though).
If someone else wants to pirate software, go for it, do it at your own risk, and not on my network. If my work decides to run pirated software, they would run the risk of getting audited, and shut down if the fines got high enough. It wouldn't be the first time I or anyone in my department has saw Microsoft come in and say during an audit "Ok so we're going to start this fine off at $XM because of these issues, and by the end of it we're going to own your company." Saw quite a few places go under because of deliberate licensing infractions.
If I'm investing my time, effort, and future into a company who deliberately takes those actions and jeopardizes my future... then I'm moving on down the road with my finger in the air. I have zero tolerance and zero respect for those kinds of operations.

@Dashrender said in It's a turrible day. Just turrible!:
I just don't understand companies... For some reason it's OK for you to steal someone else's intellectual property.. but by god, no one better steal from you...
I had a friend who worked for a place like that. He was hired on before he learned that. They wanted him to steal the latest version of Lotus Domino, he refused, they really needed it so they did break down and buy it. From that point on, they started looking for his replacement and he was fired 6 weeks later.
What's worse.. they were a neighborhood building company with their own home plans. They traveled as far as 8 hours away to look at new construction and sued people where were using plans that were to close to theirs.
Less than a year after my friend lost his job, the own committed suicide and it was discovered that he was getting double and triple building loans to cover new construction. He somehow ended up running some kind of ponzi scheme. The company lasted less than two weeks after his death.
If you look back on the end of your story, and even the very basics such as "they steal software, and they travel hours to sue people who have the same housing format". Those two things tell me one thing... they are desperate to have every dollar in their pocket. Very desperate. Which would indicate they were barely scraping by for a long period of time, probably even from the beginning... unethically pulling every dollar inward that they could.
