@BBigford Normally you pick the GUI at login. Do you see anything?

Yup, just log out and back in. At log in, look for a drop down list of options.

This is all I get after installing Cinnamon and logging out... Top right drop down doesn't show anything related to Cinnamon.

I had to reboot to get other DEs to show up.

That ended up being the case.

So I went to check out KDE and I couldn't find a match when trying sudo dnf install kde-desktop-environment... I had to do @kde-desktop-environment... Why the need for @ in regards to that package?

It's a group of packages. Like yum group install

So like installing all of the dependencies? Where it's not just one package, it's a grouping of packages...

The only place I can think of is maybe a datacenter where drives are being punished... but even then, I've raised the concern that we aren't buying the right drives if they are punished to a point of failure.

what if we maintained a community list of blacklist phone numbers? Would that be handy?

Would this be a phone list of vendors that are seen as going into the harrassment zone, not just pesky with too many follow ups?

Couldn't that be very subjective between different community members? Thinking of something compared to a crytoware list... where there is no question about the black list entries, a cryptoware extension is 100% bad. Whereas one vendor could have a rep that is just upset that day and coming off as rude... Just wondering where it start and stops, and how to get on it.

      This is an interesting idea...

Nice! You should get a job at the NSA. Looks like they need all the help they can get on pentesting.

      Reverse that, why not?

Hey we have this black-list, behave or we'll put you on it.

Actually... I think all vendors should be held to that standard. They shouldn't be under the assumption they can straight up harass people if they are told to stop calling.

At this point... if they are harassing people, then no.

Not saying they don't make good gear, but more that their sales folks are not reputable enough to stay off the black list.

    • Hyper-V homework question

So our instructor has us on a homework assignment. It's not a question she knows, it's one that is a glitch in Hyper-V that she's been trying to solve for quite some time.

*Our host workstations have Windows Server 2012 R2 installed.
*We have two physical NICs (one on the motherboard, plus one PCI card).
*We put those NICs into a team.
      *Internet connectivity works fine.
*As soon as you put that team into a virtual switch, the physical host loses Internet connectivity until you delete the virtual switch it connects to.

    • Remote connection manager

I've tried nRemoteNG, Remote Desktop Connection Manager, Terminals, and a few others. Everything typically has one big 'gotcha' that can't be overlooked.

What program is everyone using? Something with at least RDP, SSH, and VNC. Other things like HTTP, HTTPS, and Telnet I don't use as much.

@BBigford Ah, I gotcha. I never run into that because I'm a paid customer. 8-)

MobaXterm is pricey, for sure... but definitely worth it to me.

IT has a built in SFTP engine so that anytime you connect to a Linux machine, it gives you an SFTP tab for up / downloading files, so you don't have to use yet another application for that.

Don't get me wrong, $70 is nothing. I have just yet to find anything in a free version that after I used it, I said "you know... that software is awesome. I'd pay for that software."

But once you talk about paid, there's probably a lot of solutions that I could look at and opens up a whole new can of worms for alternatives to Terminals/RDCM/mRemoteNG/etc. Just never looked into paid to this point.

      Installing MobaXterm now though.

So far MXT is pretty awesome. I noticed right away it has the same scaling issues as Terminals though.. If you start a session when the screen isn't maximized, you have to re-establish the session. It only takes a few seconds but it's just something I notice.

I believe if you hit the fit to Window size button that it should resize and not totally reconnect.

yes, but it reconnects. And this can be a PITA if you are using a remote X session for example, because it will login again and your old session is lost. This IS an issue in MobaXterm.

So far, my only complaint. Not an issue just with Moba. This is an issue with many many vendors. So far, that is something I can overlook since it is so common, and it is really my only complaint. Everything else is awesome.

To be honest, most tools are using the freerdp library behind the scenes. And so does MobaXterm, AFAIK. The problem is within this library

That would make sense if all the ones having issues are using that library.

The reason I didn't know for sure about that one cause some production systems temporarily get moved over to circular logging.

Every time that happens I chirp up with "well if we have a catastrophe, backups won't be the same." This being one of those instances... but nobody had circular logging enabled it looks like. So things weren't totally screwed.
