    • Static VS DHCP for Vultr VPS

What is the general opinion here for static vs DHCP settings on a Vultr VPS? I always set them static, but the Vultr website suggests DHCP.

Getting back into this again. Got my wife on board also, on the same language. Hopefully that will help.

Does anyone use the Plus (Paid) version?

I think an important aspect here is to remember that you are trusting Vultr to run your infrastructure, but are second guessing their settings.

You're right, Good point. Thanks for bringing that up.

Right. So I'm thinking either the heat sink may need some new paste and a reseat of the heat sink, or just a new heat sink all together.

Wow I haven't used handbrake since like 2005. I was really committed to converting DVD's for my kids iPod video. Are you converting bluerays?

No, just my DVDs. We have so many kids DVDs, and I can't stand having all of them go missing or mixed up in different cases. So, on to Plex they go! I use handbrake to reduce file size.

Handbrake is the best. I too have used that tool for years.

That would solve outbound calling, but not inbound.

      This

I'm using multiple devices, but the main viewer is the Amazon fire stick. Works fantastic. Sometimes we'll have 2 streams going at once. The reason for transcoding is to get it from a large 4-5 GB file size, down to about 1.5 per movie.

I'm not running hot on my Plex server. Only my desktop PC where I do the encoding. After encoding, I move files to my plex server.

    • RE: XO disk usage issue

      Fixed it. Thanks @DustinB3403 .

Total face palm moment. When I setup backups a few months ago, I properly had XO backing up to a remote SMB share on another PC, with the share called Backups. At some point, probably during troubleshooting, I must have pointed the backup folder to just /Backups...which was located on the XO vm itself. I was backing up XO to itself.

      Is that like Inception?

    • Wordpress website for non-technical user/manager

I'm going to help a buddy set up a website for his new construction business. He's not technical at all and needs a very simple platform to create content, edit pages occasionally (if ever), etc. Wordpress is my go-to choice for this. I'm no web designer, but there are plenty of great templates out there, to fit this exact need. Decision 1, made.

Now for decision 2. I'm looking to get some feedback in regards to hosting. Simple options that I thought of so far:

      1. Vultr. Get a $5 box, spin up WP on CentOS7.
      2. A2 hosting (I picked them, because a quick google search yielded a comparison site, listing A2 as a pretty good option.)
      3. Some other shared hosting provider.

Which option is recommended in this scenario? I'd imagine, since it is a new business, that the traffic will be very low for the foreseeable future. The guy just needs a web presence right now.

I need to get my hands on Salt in my lab and test it out.

You can do it all on one machine, although there is a certain silliness to that. It is SUPER easy to set up, though.

Yeah, I've been reading the Salt posts you've been making. I just need to find the time to do it.

Have a 4K video on my Plex server (a VM running off of a Dell R710 server). It is transcoding across my network. It kept buffering and freezing, saying the plex server is not powerful enough to play the video.

closes eyes and shakes head and smiles

      Me: "Challenge accepted."

A couple more CPU cores later, and it's fixed!

    • CCleaner or similar for MAC

On Windows boxes, I've always used CCleaner in the past to remove old junk from user systems. Does anyone use something similar to keep MAC OS clean? I've used some in the past for MAC that cleans/repairs disk permissions, etc, but that was a while ago, and I forget the names of the tools I used.
