    • Edge Router Lite vs Edge Router

I've been recommending and installing the ER-Lite routers for small office deployments with zero problems. But these deployments were always for about 20-25 users. At what point (user count) would we recommend going to the next model up, the Edge Router (ER-8)

In this specific scenario, I am looking at a 70 person office.

Given the price of the Edge Router. Might as well do it at the 30-35 mark.

Yeah, price points on these things are so small compared to historical competitors.

Never. User count is never a factor in networking. That's only something that consumer networking vendors use as a guide to sell products to non-IT people who don't know about things like bandwidth, latency and traffic types. You move up to the ER-8 based on technical needs only.

At such a tiny company, very likely you are barely even looking at the ERL. Chances are, the ER-X is plenty.

Agreed. Although I prefer the ERL is preferred over the ERX mainly due to the console port access. However, as @JaredBusch mentioned earlier, the ERX has more processing power, so there is a trade off I suppose.

Snow day... So that means catching up on projects. Current project is a new backup storage device. Probably will go with a setup similar to this: https://mangolassi.it/topic/13579/hardware-design-for-sam-dr-small-rackmount-backup-device

Yep. The only reason that I can think of to put ther ER-8 in now would be so that you don't have to go back to the client later and ask them to spend more money.

Just tell them that they might need to spend it later and explain why you are saving them money today.

You posted too quick. Exactly my plan after this discussion. 🙂

@gjacobse I did some research after I saw your post. Then realized you must have a duct of some type.

    • Linode Custom Distro

Don't get too excited from the title. The procedure doesn't look that easy/reproducible. I emailed Linode support and asked them if they had an easy process for custom distro setup, similar to one of their competitors (Vultr). They sent me to the site below.

      https://www.linode.com/docs/tools-reference/custom-kernels-distros/running-a-custom-linux-distro-on-a-linode-vps

I'd like to use them to see how a FreePBX box runs on Linode, but without an easy way to install the distro, I'm not sure if I'd use them for PBX installs.

What does everyone else use to host PBXs?

@scottalanmiller Right, they can't get to the point where performance suffers. One way I could see that happening is if they "over-provision" their equipment.

What do you specifically mean by "staying viable?"

At some point they cut the cost so much that there is no profit in it.

      Right, that would be terrible.

OS Ticket worked well for us for about a year. Then we got tired of not having certain functionality like basic ticket merging. So we built our own ticketing solution.

    • Watchguard M200

Does anyone here have any documentation regarding how to disable SIP-ALG on a Watchguard device? The documentation on the internet seems lacking. I've never used a Watchguard before, and I don't have one in front of me to mess around with and figure out.

To my understanding, no, you are required to use their device for static IP capability on their network. You can push very hard to get them to bridge it in true bridge mode though.

I figured. I suppose I just have to find the right support guy at Comcast to do this for me.

I use mediawiki at home for house issues and i like it. Have not tried the others though

Its' a bit complex to use day to day, I find.

Yeah I think Grav with the admin interface is easier. No database and users can do basic bold, italic, etc through WYSIWYG. And Markdown for more advanced users.

Although we've been using ASCIIDoc a lot recently. But that's myself and another admin, no normal users.

I tried a few for internal documentation: docuwiki, wiki.js, bookstack. I liked bookstack, until I landed on. Grav. Grav, wit their learn skeleton/template is a solid winner for me.
