Both valid points, and I appreciate that it might not be "new" new, but I'd still hang back a bit. I have enough to fix around here without introducing new stuff to break

That's a great question - (oh and you actually only have two licenses, each allow 2 VMs) - I'm not sure of the legality of standing up a fifth VM, migrating, then decom'ing the old one... but I've done it, and I've know tons of people who have... again, I can't answer the legal question.
Microsoft made no comment to us about this when we went through an Audit...
Granted we are on Datacenter for all except a few hosts at remote sites. Our Datacenters use Windows Datacenter. so the might figure we pay them enough already..

I don't know anyone that has upgraded a 2012 R2 DC to 2016.
You don't... Do not upgrad Domain Controllers. Replace them.

What was over? The hosts were mid upgrade to Datacenter edition? I'm guessing once you purchase the license and assign it mentally to the hardware you'd be fine.

I assume Jason knows that too, but at the same time there wasn't an explanation as to why it was mentioned in regards to this problem without the additional information that was posted after my post.

I am waiting for 2016, myself.
Going to get it pretty much when it comes out, probably without SA.
We're running 2003, so it's not like we upgrade quickly.

Why would you upgrade DCs anyway? I would build new 2016 VMs from scratch and promote them and then demote the 2012 R2 Severs.
As far as setting other servers up with 2016, unless they are microsoft based services, I think it's too early to expect vendors to support software on 2016.

If I had to go this route, I would demote and upgrade one server. Then promote to a DC and see how it goes for a few weeks before i touched the other DCs.
