Server '16? Early adopting microsoft stuff?
I wait for crazy people to do the beta testing for me then learn from their foibles.
Unless there's a new kernel, if I recall correctly, @scottalanmiller would say this isn't really new.
That's right. I'd not call the OS new, but the updates are new.

Both valid points, and I appreciate that it might not be "new" new, but I'd still hang back a bit. I have enough to fix around here without introducing new stuff to break

I promise you @Dashrender is the only one who has done that. The rest of us are good and would not lie to you.

Paying for SA is the only option that ever makes sense (when running windows).
Not really, In the past releases have been so far apart that it made no sense to pay SA.

Do you really expect 2016 DC upgrades to be worse than previous ones?
I've never had an issue installing new DCs into a 2000 or newer domain, then decomming old ones.
I'll only have a total of four licenses (2 Standards). If I've used all of them on VMs will I be able to stand up a new DC and decom the old one?
That's a great question - (oh and you actually only have two licenses, each allow 2 VMs) - I'm not sure of the legality of standing up a fifth VM, migrating, then decom'ing the old one... but I've done it, and I've know tons of people who have... again, I can't answer the legal question.
Microsoft made no comment to us about this when we went through an Audit...
Granted we are on Datacenter for all except a few hosts at remote sites. Our Datacenters use Windows Datacenter. so the might figure we pay them enough already..

A further consideration is that two of my four licenses will be DCs. Upgrading them from 2012 R2 to 2016 is an unknown at this point.
What makes them unknown?
I don't know anyone that has upgraded a 2012 R2 DC to 2016.
You don't... Do not upgrad Domain Controllers. Replace them.

Datacenter allows for unlimited VMs on the hardware that has the DC license on it. So those would be covered with no worry. The few remaining are the only ones to worry about.

Yes, I know but those were over, temporarily during the audit as some where mid upgrade on those Hosts..

What was over? The hosts were mid upgrade to Datacenter edition? I'm guessing once you purchase the license and assign it mentally to the hardware you'd be fine.

I assume Jason knows that too, but at the same time there wasn't an explanation as to why it was mentioned in regards to this problem without the additional information that was posted after my post.

Not as easy in smaller shops that have their DC bundled in with other stuff.
But a good practice.

I am waiting for 2016, myself.
Going to get it pretty much when it comes out, probably without SA.
We're running 2003, so it's not like we upgrade quickly.

Why not? You can just migrate all the roles.
I would never in place upgrade a server
-
Why would you upgrade DCs anyway? I would build new 2016 VMs from scratch and promote them and then demote the 2012 R2 Severs.
As far as setting other servers up with 2016, unless they are microsoft based services, I think it's too early to expect vendors to support software on 2016.
-
The only reason to even consider upgrading is to be strictly compliant with the terms of licensing.

If I had to go this route, I would demote and upgrade one server. Then promote to a DC and see how it goes for a few weeks before i touched the other DCs.

I think that he means if you have only one and no licensing for a second.
