Streaming services - Are any good?
-
I currently have Hulu plus and SlingTV. I'm thinking of cancelling both. Hulu has very little selection anymore. SlingTV used to be great but now since it's the same as then actual cable channels it's always reruns. (I haven't had cable in 12 years so I didn't realize this for the first 2 months I had it)
What do you have?
-
We have Netflix, Hulu Plus, and Amazon (came with Prime).
Hulu has been annoying me since a lot of shows don't have more than around 5 previous episodes. That used to happen with the free Hulu but I've noticed it a lot with Hulu Plus recently.
I think the only thing I've actually watched on Amazon was Justified.
I use Netflix the most. I like watching older TV shows like The Office and Frasier. I also watch a lot of the bad horror movies (I'm weird).
That all said, I don't watch a ton of stuff. I probably watch just as much on YouTube as I do on the other services and its usually like an hour or two before I go to bed.

That's what I've been noticing. I'm starting to wonder why I pay for it anymore.

Same three that we have. Netflix has cut us off though, now. So that's not working out so well (just happened yesterday.)

We have a few shows that we like on Hulu, but once we finish those, maybe we won't keep that either. I've been petitioning to cut it off for a while now.

I've thought about it a good bit. I always come back to its only $7 a month so it's not going to make much of a difference. But it is getting annoying enough that I might do it.
I never watch any of the movies or anything other than a handful of TV shows.

I prefer to think of it as three more video games a month

How did Netflix cut you off? Is it because you were using a VPN or something to watch it?

I believe he is using a VPN service or DNS hack, so that would be why. Netflix has been pushing hard to detect and block that.
I am going to be interested to see if they manage to block my home OpenVPN connection when the kids go to Japan this summer. Since it is a 100% route through the tunnel and out the US based residential IP, I suspect not.

I trialed Hulu Plus and decided it was not worth it.
I pay for Netflix at $7.99/month, Crunchyroll at $99.95/year, and have Amazon Prime at $99/year.
I have a solid antenna for over the air broadcast in the US.
I additionally have a SlingBox and DVR located in Japan that gets over the air channels. If I fully count Amazon Prime as only a TV service, my monthly outlay is $24.57.

So when did actual normal cable become just marathon reruns? I hate marathons, I want variety. SlingTV shows the same as the normal channels and that's all they have. I've check it against hotel TVs and they were the same

Don't know but it was quite some time ago, even before Netflix got big. Cable has been "nothing to watch" for a very long time. They just gave up, their audience hasn't been remaining their audience due to content for over a decade, maybe two.

I have not had a subscription cable service for more than 10 years.

I haven't had one it 12 years until I tried SlingTV

We like sling TV, if, for nothing else the Cartoon Network, Boomerang, and the Disney Channels.
Hulu has the current shows we like to watch, and Netflix / Amazon has most everything else.

I'm getting to the point that "other peoples' houses" haven't had it (or at least used while I'm there) for almost that long. I still see it once in a great while, but fifteen years ago you'd see it anytime you were at someone's house. Now, it's getting rare.

So I worked for that cable company in FL. They did IP TV. The subscriptions were dropping off, so the one guy had a good idea. He had the idea to offer one of the premium channels (HBO, Starz, etc) if you bought a fast enough internet service. We made more off of internet, and this would only help us. The one management person went as far as to say "that's illegal"??? They kept telling him it wasn't possible, no one would go for it, etc.
Literally about 2 weeks later, HBO announced HBO now......
It's no wonder that no one watches cable. They refuse to innovate at all.
