      Hi Guys

Q: We have a virtual server running on a Hyper V hypervisor.
We'd like to use the USB ports within the VM on a daily basis....

I know you can plug the usb into the physical hypervisor and then RDP into the virtual and use the USB resources but we'd like to have a permanent access to USB ports from the virtual server when its plugged into the server....Is this possible and how do we do it if so.

      Thanks

        Hey Joel,

Have you considered a USB over IP type product? I've just been made aware of them and haven't had a chance to use one yet... but basically it is a USB connection with a Network card, and whatever server you want to use it has to run a software package to do so...

It's worth taking a look at.

What's stopping the permanence now? Granted it wasn't Hyper-V, it was ESXi, but I had a USB key that was plugged into the VM host running ESXi, assigned that USB port to a specific VM, and that VM had access to the port 24/7 until I manually disconnected it.

I ran it that way for well over a year.

Ultimately I needed/wanted more flexibility than that, so I did as dafyre mentioned and purchased a Digi Anywhere USB over IP box. Now my VM can move to any physical host and the USB will always work because it's not tied to the hardware of the VM host.

I don't know what it is about niche products like this but they please me greatly. Excellent examples of creative problem solving.

Interesting product. What a great idea.
