Electric cars: New vehicles to emit noise to aid safety
New electric vehicles will have to feature a noise-emitting device, under an EU rule coming into force on Monday. It follows concerns that low-emission cars and vans are too quiet, putting pedestrians at risk because they cannot be heard as they approach.
All new types of four-wheel electric vehicle must be fitted with the device, which sounds like a traditional engine.Yup, because people can't be responsible for themselves at all.
It's for the blind.
My car is great for them, then.

This is an odd assumption that the "noise" of an engine would tell blind people it's clear to cross. Why not use the crosswalk signal or a seeing eye dog or literally anything else besides the "cars need to make more noise so the blind don't get run over because they can't hear the car coming".
Can they not hear the wheel noise?

Over background noise? No.

But yes it is a stupid fucking law.

I don't accept that. That's a pretty damned HUGE burden on society for such a small group.

Over background noise? No.
What background noise? In a situation where there are nothing but electric everything, there won't be nearly as much noise as there is today.

No, if you've ever heard a car coasting or a bicycle without someone pedaling, under normal outdoor conditions no one can hear that noise, at least not before it is way too late. That's how you see videos of people have their car roll away from the while standing right next to it and not looking. Rolling tires are generally just about silent.

LOL - well you already made those thing irrelevant - again, person standing next to car can't hear it rolling.. so yeah I get that nearly nothing is going to provide noise short of just having speakers with fake noise.

That's what years of studies have found. This isn't something new, it is something that electric cars have been dealing with for decades, and just people riding bicycles.

Trump's 4 July tanks prompt 'don't panic' warning
The US military has told Washington DC residents not to panic if they see tanks on the streets for President Donald Trump's Independence Day parade.
At least two Bradley armoured carriers and two M1A1 Abrams tanks will be moved to the heart of the US capital for the president's "Salute to America".

Thank goodness the appeals court had some sense. That judge needs to be investigated. That kind of stuff should be a serious crime.

I was thinking more - where "good family" = wealthy, well connected.
And yeah, that judge should likely be bounced from the bench and possibly in jail.

And someone should point out that the judge was pretty excited that another rapist could go to a "good college". American universities are already hot beds for sexual predators and "good colleges" are getting more and more famous for places that protect predators.
