Starting to Plan our Sept Trip
-
So starting to make solid plans for our annual NTG road trip to SpiceWorld. This year it looks like there will be 4 adults in our car (2014 Malibu). @Mike-Davis from Auburn NY, @FiyaFly from near Flint MI and @art_of_shred and I. We will be going through Canada to get to Flint to pick up @FiyaFly but after that what route do you suggest? Anything cool to do or see along the way?
We will be stopping for a hotel one night on the way just cause I will kill someone if they make me drive from Western NY to Austin TX in one go this time.

@Minion-Queen Any reason your not flying?

Flying is expensive. Driving is not.
Driving takes more time, but when you can work while driving, that makes it very worth it over flying.

Plus it's 4 people, not just one. So driving can be split by multiple people and the savings is HUGE.

meh.... i'd rather fly. i drive enough as is :). but if driving with friends, a road trip once a year is fun.
-
I have my hotel booked and of course the ticket was purchased last year.
Looks like that will get refunded since I am a SpiceCorp leader.
Just waiting until a little closer to get a flight.
-
I would like to do this drive someday. This year I am flying though.
-
Since I'm going alone I'll be flying as well.
-
I only drive down because flying out of Dallas to Austin is kind of pointless. Although the MEGABUS! will take you straight there as well, and there is luxury options for bus service between DFW/HOU/AUS leaving almost every hour on the hour. Trip is fast down the highways here in Texas. But ol' Black Betty does the drive well, so I take her instead.
Reminds me of this recruiter who was hitting me up for a job in Austin. Would love to move there, but had to mention to her that Dallas and Austin are almost four hours apart. Folks don't understand sometimes how big Texas is.

Exactly. We can all split the cost. Flying means time that I am unavailable driving means I can continue working as if I was at my desk.

The cost of driving down and back is the cost of one plane ticket.
-
NTG also has some pretty fun road trips. @scottalanmiller and I have done a few together. Because we all work remotely the trip turns into a huge company meeting every time.
-
@Minion-Queen What's your time worth? What's your teams time worth?

Time? We will be working the whole time. With Jet packs and wifi in my car we can work just as if we are at our desks. Last year I did about 15 billable hours in the car.
-
And again it gives my team a chance to work together instead via Skype which is cool and all but face to face time is invaluable.

What's the value of getting dedicated meeting time in one place worth?

I wish you had room for a fifth but I'm a little big to be a fifth...

And you don't have time to take off a full week for a 3 day event either I am sure.
We will probably leave on Sunday and take our time to arrive in Austin by Tuesday (this depends on anything going on day before this year).

I don't work at my full-time job Sunday or Monday, so I wouldn't have to take those off. I was planning to fly back Saturday or Sunday anyways, so even if I had to take one extra day off on the following week (like Tuesday), that'd be fine I'm sure.
