Ditto. But it still got stolen. I tried to use Google Pay and it was rejected, so I switched to credit card and used mine.
The local bank came up good for me though. I had the $$ back in my account a day later.

Actually, it was a gas station here in town. Several other folks I know had something similar happen over a few days, so let's just say I won't be going back there, lol.
Someone has a skimmer on the pump you used
Except it was the inside card machine in this case, not the pump.
I just stopped in for a snack, lol.
Sounds like an inside job.
I... handn't thought about that. It very well could be.
Did you use the magnetic stripe on your card?
In this type of situation I only see the cashier as potentially being guilty if he was able to swipe the card without you seeing.
What at the changes he could attach a skimmer on an in store reader and you not notice? Unless they make them super tiny nowdays...
Krebs on Security had a series of articles on inside jobs IIRC.
There's plenty of inside jobs articles out there.
A micro-camera pointed at the PIN pad with the skimmer in the slot.
Manufacturers are getting better at protecting the slot, but no system is foolproof when someone can open the cover and plant the slider internally.

Skimmer fit inside anything. They put them inside ATMs. If they can put them there, anything in a store is way easier.

Maybe I'm really behind - the only skimmers I've heard about inside the ATMs actually go between the cables...
So sure, I guess they could do that on the ones in the store as well.

Krebs found the slot style skimmers in 2014! https://krebsonsecurity.com/2014/08/stealthy-razor-thin-atm-insert-skimmers/

Yeah, "Oh the humanity!".
The human person is not perfect.
The imperfect is not capable of building a perfect system.
Therefore, nothing is perfect.
Or something like that.
How often does that bubble need to get burst before folks take notice that there is nothing foolproof out there?
Cloud: Your sh#t on someone else's sh#t and if that sh#t gets flushed youzza EFFED.
EDIT: Asterisks are code.

No, I used the chip reader there.

Or the firmware on the card reader got hacked. This is what I'm suspecting because I've stopped at that place several times over the last 5 or 6 years.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. I'm relatively certain the card reader itself isn't exactly modern, lol.

Can't download a Printer Driver from support.lexmark.com.
Why - because it's a .EXE file and the FW blocks it... Like really? oFFS!

heh - basically what our off site contractor did... Still.. I get security - esp with PHI involved. But you can't break the tools that your support people need.... jeez.

oh - I I don't see it as breaking tools IT needs - I need they need to provide a solution for IT - such as the one I suggested - or a separate network for IT to use that doesn't have those things blocked.

yes - there needs to be a path - an accepted and useable path - to get the tools and such needed. So that one doesn't 'break the system' and end up with a data breach... That... That would be a very bad thing (to happen again).
