Anyone want to use enclosed shopping malls as colo facilities?
-
We have several shopping malls across the US as clients. They are divided among a couple of different owners.
One of the owners approached us to inquire about the possibility of leasing space to co-location businesses.
These are enclosed shopping malls, like those built in the 70s. They all had "Majors" or "Anchors" which have left and now there hundreds of thousands of sqft (think Macy's, JC Penney, Sears, Crowleys, etc) sitting empty. Wide open spaces with power and climate controlled.
I know little about the COLO business, I'm just a customer of Co-Lo facilities.
If any of you, or friends of yours would be interested in a conversation with the man who is spear-heading this (who also knows nothing about Co-Los), please contact me and I'll put you in touch.

They are not climate controlled enough and secured enough for good colo. there would be major updates to the facilities required before it was any kind of decent colo.
There will also need to be multiple fibers ran, etc.
But that is an interesting potential use for the space. Just no idea if something like that could be updated enough for a low enough price to be cost effective.

Heck, have them get in touch with Amazon. They took over the space of two previous Malls about <20 miles from me and now are distribution centers.
Who knows, for the right price, everybody wins.

Throw it out there. The two malls they took over were in dense suburbs so its all about getting products closer to the customer for quicker delivery. I think they really want that 2 hour delivery window bad.
They became operational this year and now 10% of products I can pick up same day (I choose next day delivery) while 60% is delivered next day and 40% is 4 days or less.

Encourage to make indoor soccer, indoor tennis, volleyball, and basketball. There is enough empty space for both.
Southroads mall in Omaha, Nebraska USA enclosed a colo type business many many years ago.
Not a big fan of Amazon in terms of supporting the tax base, but still uses the roads. Sports courts and CoLo.
