Move Linux VM from Windows Host to Linux Host

I am mostly trying to figure out how the transition will be if I decide not to go out and buy VMWare workstation for Linux, and if my performance will be mostly the same.

This is the opposite of what your title and OP says...I have no idea what you mean.
Part2:
The "host" is VMWare Workstation.So you want to move from VMWare Workstation (that is running on Windows), to VMWare Workstation (that is running on Ubuntu)??? Or the other way around as you stated in Part 1?

Buy VMware Workstation... It's so worth the $250 or whatever it costs now. We had a couple slow weeks a while back and I migrated all of my VMware Workstation VMs to the built in Hyper-V on Windows 10..... it was an absolute nightmare.
Workstation makes things nice and easy.

VMWare Workstation is not a solution I would use for hosting a VM. I'd move to KVM on Fedora. But if you have to use Ubuntu, KVM on there will work fine too.

Do you have to purchase a new license of VMware Workstation? Is it not transferable to the new OS? I'd imagine you can just use your key on the Ubuntu/Windows install, whatever it is you're moving to.

I'm confused, what does Linux have to do with the statement? Take out the word Linux, and it means exactly the same thing. Kernel is a generic term, nothing specific to Linux. It's just coincidental that the item you asked about is related to Linux.

Windows and Ubuntu are operating systems.
NTKernel and Linux are kernels.
KVM is a virtualization component that is part of Linux.When you run KVM, you are also running Linux. Linux becomes a hypervisor, with a monolithic system kernel, together. They are the same thing here.
NTKernel has no equivalent to this, nothing else does, but the closest think is VMware ESXi. If you install ESXi, you are seeing ESXi, nothing else. It has a shell of its own.
Like ESXi, KVM can host a shell. Because it can host a shell, you can layer on an OS directly onto it. If you do so and those layers are Ubuntu, then you have Ubuntu directly on KVM, rather than in a VM.

Correct that there is no shim, but "side by side" is a confusing way to look at it, they are one and the same, rather than side by side.
