IP security Camera Question.
-
I remember seeing security cameras discussed at one time. I am looking at IP cameras. Are there any suggestions on where to start. Our building has two Hikvision DS-9632IN-ST hooked up to a Charley Foxtrot of various cameras. This is not my wheelhouse. Could someone point me in a direction of where to get an idea of decent brand of camera? Thanks.

Ubiquiti actually makes some good cameras and a decent DVR.

U da man! Thanks Jared.

Looked for one earlier this week. Sadly, UBNT does not have cams with with zoom lenses (only wide angle FOV) AFAIK. We could really make good use of them for observing long running machine stress tests for example. On the other hand... they are supposed to be security camsEdit: see below

@thwr digital zoom is what you likely would be using on anything in this price range anyways.

Just had a look at the datasheet: https://dl.ubnt.com/datasheets/unifi/UniFi_Video_G3_DS.pdf
It's just the dome version that features a wide angle lens. I think we'll get one and try it.

Sure, but a proper lens would just be better.
OK, it gets even better. Just had a look at the price tag: https://shop.omg.de/ubiquiti-networks/unifi/unifi-video/ - will order one on monday
do they work "standalone" for testing purposes? E.g. could you view a live stream or something like that without a DVR?

Working without a DVR, I would think so. But it wouldn't do much for their primary customer group.
I might setup one for my home though...

My entire home network design is front to back ubiquiti. security cameras, switches, AP's and firewall.

It's just for testing purposes, will get a DVR later.

My entire LAN/WIFI at work will be UBNT soon

Yes, the cameras have a web interface where you can view video. Last time I checked they hadn't implemented to ability to record to microSD card yet though.
I can't imagine you can do 'magic zoom' from the camera's web interface. Which is something you will want to test out, because it is pretty awesome. I used it to capture licence plates. When I was setting it up you couldn't even do it directly from the NVR web interface, you had to use the phone App, I don't know if that has been changed.

I've noticed that one of cams even features 3x optical zoom. Would be awesome.
Thanks for your feedback.

Yeah, I would have put the extra money down for that job, but that was before the UVC G3 Pro models were even announced, and the UVC Pro models were discontinued and out of stock everywhere. Just a UVC G3 model wasn't the ideal solution, but it managed to do the job.
