      Hello all!

I'm new to this forum and hope that it's appropriate to request help here. I'm not great with Linux so I might some things explained on a lower skilled user level.

I have a brand new Ubuntu 16.04 installed and updated. I've run the sudo curl https://raw.githubusercontent.com/scottalanmiller/xenorchestra_installer/master/xo_install.sh | bash command which ultimately results in a bunch of errors. I'm not sure how to post the text from the terminal window but I've attached a screenshot showing some of the errors.

I did google around a little and found a thread on this site with some information regarding replacing npm with yarn but I don't really understand that process or how to make those changes. If I can provide more information somehow just let me know what you need and I can try to get it.

      Thank you!

Welcome to the community. I'll page @DustinB3403 who primarily works on that install.

@snaplink the installer you're using is out of date, please use the one that can be found here.

To be able to post the text from the terminal, you'll want to connect to your installation using Putty (if you're on windows).

              Ubuntu 16.04

You may want to jump to as least Ubuntu 16.10, otherwise you may run into issues with the file restore feature.

And probably good to go to 17.04 if the script is tested there.

                  This worked!

Now I guess I should jump to 16.10 or maybe even 17.04 to stay current?

@snaplink 16.10 at a minimum is recommended. I need to test the installer against 17.04.

If you'd like to test against 17.04 and see if it work (and report back) awesome.

I'm waiting for yarn add [email protected] to finish up currently. The script failed for me this morning, but that seems to be an issue with the internet connection. Which is weird, that's the one thing I haven't had any issue with on my box at wholesaleinternet.com. The internet feed is phenomenal compared to what I'm used to.

                            It worked!
I was even able to install guest-tools and I'm able to login to the web interface and connected to my single host.

Is there any output from a terminal I can provide other than "it worked"?

If the installation worked like a charm, odds are we won't need the output. I'll test the installation tonight from my home lab.

I know I started this thread for some installation issues but if it's ok I'd like to tag on some backup questions?

I'd like to do Delta Backups of my fileserver. Currently I'm using ShadowProtect and running what they call a "mixed" backup. All that really means is I do a full backup late friday night and then M, T, W, Th, F I run incrementals during our office hours of 0800hrs - 1800hrs.

I'm having some trouble understanding how to replicate that backup into Xen Orchestra. I chose Delta Backup and have figured out the rest (I think) except the actual schedule portion. I'd like to replicate what I'm doing in Shadow Protect with new fulls on Friday after hours and then then incrementals during the normal business hours on weekdays. I don't know if I'm picking days for the full and hours for the incrementals. Maybe this Delta backup is a bit different than the backup I'm doing with Shadow Protect? I hope that all made sense, if not I can try to explain it differently

                                Thanks!

@snaplink Here is some information on the Delta Backup operation.

If you setup your Delta to run once a day, every day, and rotate every 7 Days you'd have exactly what you're doing now, but without shadow protect (which sucks hairy balls, shadow protect, not the delta backup. Literally that software blows.)

If you wanted to increase the schedule, and the retention to say run a delta every 4 hours, you'd be keeping 6 times as much delta (but you'd have file level restore from your last backup). Which could be as old as 4 hours.

Of course you'd want to increase your retention to more than 7 (days) or really 7 Backups before the system compresses the oldest backup into the second oldest delta.

                                  Make sense?

Dustin, you're a gentleman and a scholar here. I appreciate the reply. The only reason I'm running the current incremental every hour is because we have some knuckleheads who create, modify and or delete files randomly it seems so the idea was to keep the most updated backups as possible. Here is an example of our latest incremental, as you can see it with our critical departmental share it only backed up 10.MB. Granted we have 15 employees out on a volunteer day today it's usually around 50MB.

Not to be dense here but just I'm following you in that if I set the Delta starting today at 1400hrs, and set the day to M, T, W, Th, F and the hour to every 2 hours (one doesn't seem to be an option) I should achieve the same results?

I think I'm confused on when the next full would run and how to schedule that into XO

The delta backup job would run every 2 hours. The "Next" full (as really a new full is never rebuilt) would be when you hit your retention number.

I want to keep 40 backups, and then compress.

If you needed backups more frequently continuous replication could work, but isn't designed for file restores. It could operate as often as every minute if I recall correctly.

With Delta backups, you can restore an individual file, from the previous backups. The file gets downloaded to the admin's computer, and then you simply replace it.

The file restore capability of XO is still a bit of a work in progress, it works. But isn't as robust as Veeam Endpoint is. Which would be my recommendation to replace Shadow Protect.

5.8.1 was release earlier today. My test build is failing, but haven't had time to dig in and find out why.
