Recently got a quote for the following used server --
Dell R720 SFF Dual E5-2670 8 core 2.5 Ghz 192 GB RAM 8x New Samsung 480GB SSD H710 integrated LSI SAS RAID 0-6 16 drive Bay server Dual 750W power supply Rail kit 1 year warranty
Quoted price was $2629/ea. The plan would be to replace my aging R905 with two newer servers.
Comments or suggestions?
Looking at the new SSDs (PM/SM series?), the good amount of RAM, the decent CPU and 1y warranty... Doesn't sound bad at all. Dell is also not a bad choice.
Homelab? If so: Do you really want to spend so much money?

I f***[moderated]ing wish we could get pricing like that in Canada.

Have a buddy buy it for you and hand ship it up.
But @Danp I thought the dell systems had a hard time with the Samsung ssds..

border agent: That's a nice server you got there.... be a shame if you had to... pay taxes on it! muahahahaha
-
@thwr No, this would be for production usage. The SSDs are enterprise Samsung. Here's the spec sheet.

Nothing to claim, a buddy gave me this equipment from his personal lab.

Not sure. Was told that they would work fine, but would exhibit the known issue in OMSA.

Eh... Canada sounds almost as bad as American customs, except they just ask, "anything to declare"
"Nope, just headed home"

And worst case, why not just have a receipt for $100 for computer equipment.
What's the tax on that?

You seem to be under the impression that customs agents are dumb. You would be incorrect in my experience.
Tax rate here is 13.5% so potentially saving $500 in tax is not worth the risk. They can seriously mess with you.
2630x1.25x1.135= $3731CDN.... sigh.
Edit: checked xe.com, it's $1.30:1 sobs quietly for the death of his online shopping fun times

What if we inserted and secured the servers into one of the big bubble bouncy ball things and delivered it via trebuchet?
-
I mean, it isn't like he's using HDDs; everything should still be within warranty on landing right?

Depends on the drive. I tried Kingston and EDGE SSDs that the manufacturer claimed worked, and exhibited issues in addition to not appearing in OMSA.

OMG how are you getting Enterprise drives so CHEAP? I would expect the drives to be more than your listed price.
