How do people use PowerShell? Just opening it takes so long I forget why I was opening it!
Like @dafyre - I don't seem to have this issue. But then again, I am on a Windows machine. Could it be a Linux issue (of sorts)?
It's FAR worse on Windows than on Linux. Like 10x longer, maybe?
Maybe Windows users are just used to things being so slow that they don't notice?
I'd wager you have something going on on that system. I click the Powershell icon and start typing.
Find me a system where it is fast. I've never seen PS come up quickly, never once.
My laptop and every server I connect to.
Can you video that? I've never seen it, literally, never. How are you getting it to be fast? Or do we have totally different definitions of fast?
You honestly don't believe us that powershell can open quickly?
I honestly do not. I think it is far more likely that you have a higher tolerance for slowness and see what I see as a delay as "normal".
It's literally opening in less than a second on everything I try.
On the first time that you open, or only after it's been used on machines that are already running?

same here...
I KNOW you see it as slow. Every machine we have, it's slow. Find me any one you can that isn't.

Okay, so I try a 2012 R2 box and it was super fast. So clearly not slow every time for me. Maybe I only notice when it is slow, but it's often enough that I expect it.
What OSes do you have? Maybe it is just 2016?

2008 R2 through to 2016. I've had it slow on 2008 before but definitely a vast minority.

The Windows 7 desktop I am on right now,.. takes just about 3sec to load... I see now that I am also RDP to a 2102r2 server ... and that is near instant....

Yeah, 2012 R2 (which is 8.1) that I just tested was fast. Three seconds is insanely slow, even one second is slower than other shell options.

@scottalanmiller Yes powershell for me opens slowly sometimes. The window opens but i cant type anything for 5 seconds.
-
@scottalanmiller Is the slowness you're complaining about the time it takes the powershell window to appear, or the time it takes to allow you to type?
-
@momurda said in What Are You Doing Right Now:

Yes, that's what I normally see. 3-8 seconds of delay before the window lets me type. I also often see it slow after it opens with individual keystrokes being really slow.

Time to type, appearance is "always" immediate.
-
@scottalanmiller I've seen it slow on Server 2016 before (along with doing Windows updates). It's artifically slow where I work because of some random GPO that will eventually be killed. It's speedy on my home box, but that's 32 GB beast with an SSD.
-
3-5 seconds to open on any server or desktop I've worked on; definitely not "instant" but not "slow" either.

That's what I call "really slow." Whcih might be a lot of the issue, I'd like it fast like CMD.EXE or Bash.

Eh... Here's a youtube link. Make sure you set it for 1080P...https://youtu.be/bO91xJR6Xs8
You'll see I have no powershell processes running, and it opens in a second.
