What Are You Doing Right Now

This guy feels like he is totally focused on "owning the network" and "doing things his way" to the point that he's complaining about his CEO wanting to be in control publicly! He says that everything that is "normal" in an SMB is wrong, but gives zero reason for his beliefs. Basically, he sounds like a control freak that doesn't understand IT and just wants power and money.
-
I'm surprised that every single person jumped on and was like "oh yeah, this is bad" even though he didn't come up with a single problem on the network. Just stated standard, sensible things, or said things that made no sense like claiming that there was no firewall (um, bullshit, of course there is) or that he's a system admin (um, no, he's not.) Yet everyone is like "oh yeah, you are getting screwed, get out of there." Heck, I want that client. Let me know who they are. Sounds like someone that actually has a head on their shoulders.

Yeah I don't really see much wrong with their current setup. Only change I see that could be beneficial is a better equipment naming scheme (maybe, maybe not... i don't know what it is like currently) and clean up the racks a little bit.
No network access required to do that stuff.

Yeah, is there like two pieces of equipment? Who cares. I mean sure, take a few seconds and name it, but WTF, who cares. This place wasn't big enough for a single IT guy yesterday, how much can they need today?

I think that this is worth a read. If I was the CEO and say this thread, I'd be pretty unhappy and definitely not give this guy access.

with the guy who posted or the it guy he had for years

The guy who posted sounds like he is crazy. The guy that has been there for years sounds reasonable.
The CEO is agreeing with my view, that the guy who has been around for years is to be trusted and the new guy demanding access and to spend money without justification should be blocked.

I'm glad I read the thread before reading any of everyone's comments here - it ensured I felt the way you all did entirely on my own.
Naming - yeah not great, but so what? it works for them.
No Firewall - seems very unlikely - but I suppose it's possible they have Internet IPs from their ISP, but still seems very unlikely. No endpoint protection - except what windows already has - personally, I'm moving away from 3rd party AV myself (haven't quite bit the bullet in this office yet). If they are small enough, central admin of AV just might not be needed.
Things having off the rack - this is a small SMB - so what? Is it awesome, of course not.. but again, it works, move on. -

The main issue I ask here is - why was this guy hired? The OP clearly thinks he's god's gift to IT, but really, why was he hired?

Yes, I'm wondering that, too. He doesn't seem to know what he needs to know to do the job he thinks he is there to do. he doesn't even seem to know the meaning of his own title. The CEO clearly doesn't agree with his belief as to his role. Something is certainly wrong.
Maybe this guy is like an intern who is mad that he isn't the manager? He said himself, he's been in politics and not tech for some time now.

just finished reading and the guy that posted sure is complaining a whole lot. If it's working why fix it.

Don't get stuck in that. Just because it's working doesn't make it sound. RAID 5 100 TB array might be working, but it's generally considered unsound, unless you just don't care about your data.

True story.

The oddest thing is he still hasn't responded. Seems like this would be a good time to justify/explain your comments and save some face. Or someone might send that thread to that users CEO.

The reality is that he will likely never respond because he's embarrassed now.

@scottalanmiller I love when you said , "It's the CEO's network, the CEO's company. " I've met some people who have a power struggle about it.
-
Bah! I missed a good thread.
I can empathize with having to wrap my head around "CEO's network / CEO's company" concept. Soon after transitioning into IT I realized our job isn't to protect the network from the company, but rather make the network do what the company needs. We do have a duty to warn the company if it has an idea that would be harmful to the network, but ultimately, the company decided what it wants to do with its network.

I think this has a lot to do with where you are the company. If you are the head of IT, then you should understand the business goals and being making decisions to that end.. but if you are the IT lacky - then your boss or their boss is the one making the real decisions, you (assuming it's part of your job) make your recommendations, and they get to live by their actual decisions.

It's a VERY common failing in IT to feel a sense of "ownership" of a network; instead of realizing that we just help to maintain other peoples' networks.

Yeah. Now there is an argument to be made that it isn't working, and they just haven't realized it yet. But that generally applies to lacking patches and updates, not to not having features.
