So my friend has over 31,000 pictures on her computer. I told her she needs to back all of that stuff up even if its just an external hard drive. She needs redundancy. She didn't do it. Now her hard drive broke and she's having a freak out. I helped her but when I said we need to go purchase an external hard drive she still refused.
File this under reasons why I should charge an arm and a leg for my services. Maybe If it costed more for me to fix it she would actually listen to my advice. Sigh.

Yep, friends shouldn't help friends - it causes bad situations.

I just make it too easy for them. People only put effort into things if it removes the need for more effort down the road it seems like. It took awhile for this to be fixed and I didn't have a lot of time to begin with. No one seems to consider that. I think I'm going to tell her to go to geek squad so she can get a taste of what other people are dealing with.

The next time something bad happens, yeah that's about your only way to force the issue.
Oh, something's broke? Well the first thing you need to do is get our your checkbook and write two checks. The first one is to Best Buy (or thatever consumer electronics store you have nearby) to buy an external drive, and second is a check to me for $150. If she refuses either, Well, I'm sure the guys at GeekSquad will be more than happy to help you. as I just don't have the time to assist you for free.

I say that 100% serious. I will not help people for free. Period. If they want help, they can do it themselves or pay someone. I send most people to a friend of mine with a shop in my hometown because his rate is lower than mine.

I'm deploying Windows 10 today.
about 7 mins to copy the image down, then another 7-10 while it detects the hardware.. then minimal config and off to the user.

I don't work for free for people I don't know personally. And those that I do work for free, really we have more a symbiotic relationship. I do work for them, then do work for me, like car repairs, etc.

Yeah most of the people I help are either very close friends or bartering. Like actual, have to get my hands dirty help, not just "hey you should be using CrasphPlan".

Instead of an external hard drive recommend Amazon Cloud Drive, or something similar. $12/year for unlimited picture storage. Won't help now but in the future...

This is one of those situations where my empathy for others clouds my judgment. Most of the time it's a strength, just not in this situation.

feeling like I'm gouging keeps my one off fees low to home users. Businesses, I charge $100/hr, home users, somewhere between $35-50 typically.

I'm reaching a point where my free time is worth more to me than $50 an hour but I don't think my services are so unbelievable that I would feel comfortable charging more. I may just stop doing it altogether.

Well that's what you have to decide. While I know Scott can easily earn way more than $50/hr, that's been a rare thing in my life. Home support is not something I advertise or seek out either. The less than 20 hours a year I do it, in general I don't mind.

I don't seek it out either but Geek Squad and others like it are essentially highway robbery. I can't save everyone though. Both Scott and Jared have mastered their craft to a degree that they can charge almost whatever they want. I'm not there yet. One day!

Are the they though? What's their bench rate? $90/hr? How much does a plumber charge? or an electrician?
