What's the current thinking on SAS/SATA SSDs in RAID configuration?

Would something like a 10 drive RAID 5 array make sense?
With say 2TB or larger SSDs?

it's a math question, pure and simple. What's the chances of a URE on the drives in question?

With SSD, essentially zero as the math shows.

I'm not sure which side this puts you on? pro or against SSD in RAID 5?

Scott did some math around here a few years ago that showed SSD on RAID 5 was totally viable. What I don't know is what type of SSD were required? i.e. Enterprise class, prosumer, consumer?

As long as this is for capacity this is viable, if this is for performance, you'll find that no hardware controller is likely to be able to handle that many SSDs at full speed.

Pro, I was in response to you but didn't hit quote apparently. There is essentially zero URE chance with SSDs as far as the math shows for most drives.

                    For capacity.

How much data can, for example, a PERC H840 move? All I can find is that it's 12 Gbps PER PORT, with 8GB NV Cache, seems like it'd easily handle 10x SSDs in a RAID 10.

Genuinely curious, where is this math that shows this?

You have to buy one and test it. No one releases those numbers 🙂

xByte has done that in the past.

Sure, if you buy me the server and drives, I'll get the PERC and test it! :face_without_mouth:
