10Gb/s Firewall Choice for Colocation
-
I have a customer at Colocation America in Los Angeles that has a 10Gb/s fiber connection coming from Cogent (being installed in a few days.) Internally on their network there is no need for fiber, so we will use 10GigE copper instead. They forgot to buy a firewall or router (or anything) for their setup (I wasn't brought in for the networking piece, that was added only after they realized that they didn't have anything) so we are trying to buy one right away now as they had hoped to be live yesterday and don't have anything except thirteen servers and nothing to plug them into.
Doing some quick research, it looks like the Ubiquiti Unifi USG XG ( the USG-XG-8 ) will fit the bill. It has eight 10Gb/s SFP+ ports and a DPI throughput rate of 50Gb/s which is plenty for us.
Anyone feel like this is a bad solution? Anyone have other suggestions? We plan to buy in a few hours, so this has to be vetted quickly.
For day one, we aren't even going to get another switch, they have a small switch now and it will plug directly into the firewall, very limited, but it's enough. They already bought the switch, but had forgotten to deploy it! Or to get GBICs for it. So once they deployed it, had nowhere to plug something into it. GBICs were ordered last night, arrive today. So that part is solved we hope.
We will need one copper GBIC for the LAN and one fiber GBIC for the Cogent connection.

Looks like the ER‑8‑XG could also be a good fit if you prefer the EdgeRouter series over the Unifi stuff. Also slightly less expensive, and better performance.

I always recommend the EdgeMax line over the UniFi. Go with this recommendation.

Hope you don't buy GBICs because they wont fit. You need SFP+ modules.

Also make sure you get the right module for the fiber if you are only getting the module for one side of it. There are singlemode, multimode and a couple of variations. Fiber won't autonegotiate or do anything like copper. If it ain't right, it ain't gonna work.

I thought that this was discontinued? We searched for it last night and could not find it.

Me too, we started there but Ubiquiti's EdgeRouter main page didn't list anything with 10GigE options. The Infinity wasn't on there anymore.

Oh the infinity? yup it is no longer being sold. let me search for the post.

I have a feeling that they will only look at the Unifi because they care a LOT about it being Amazon and Prime, and Amazon doesn't carry the EdgeRouter, only from third parties.

Yeah, that's what I thought. They discontinued the EdgeRouter Infinity, but the Unifi equivalent is still available. Oddly.

I thought I read that, but not seeing where. It is still on the main page.

Well, I'll see if we can get that. Would be nice.

USG-XG-8 is the one that is getting it production halted at least from this: https://community.ubnt.com/t5/UniFi-Updates-Blog/USG-XG-8-Product-Status-Update/ba-p/2734268

Oh, THAT makes so much more sense! But Amazon's stock indicates the opposite. Very weird.
