can you elaborate?
Have a Nextcloud instance somewhere. Download the Nextcloud app to your phone and sign in. Setup the app to automatically backup your photos and other items to your Nextcloud instance. You lose your phone or it dies? No problem.

Just install Nextcloud, and back up yoru data there. Nothing to really elaborate on, it's online storage and you can copy anything you want to it.

Fair enough, I didnt know if there was a configuration to it, or What nextcloud really was, granted I couldn't have looked it up.

This is what I do.

@wrcombs Google Photos is excellent as well, free and supports Android and iOS
-
@wrcombs I use "UpThere" from Western Digital. It's a dollar or 2 a month(I'd rather pay than give google more of my info) plus nice gui for the wife when she looks at and downloads pictures from her laptop. It syncs pics and video from my phone whenever I am on wifi.
Nextcloud is certainly nice and works well but you can have UpThere running in 2 min or less
-
@jmoore You trust WD more then Google?
-
@aaronstuder I do. Admittedly I guess its because I have not heard of all the things they do like Google does with your info. I hope they do not but who knows.
I know with google and any other free service I am the product. I don't know if its true but I hope if I pay for a service my information is a little more private. So I tend to do this as much as possible. I prefer to pay for as much as I can to mitigate that.

What about the backup of the nextcloud instance?

That backup of the backup would be a completely different question.
-
@wrcombs If you move the primary storage to the nextcloud instance, this is not backup anymore. How do you effectively backup the nextcloud instance? I use a script I made with borg that stops the service, dump the db etc.
-
But you could do something as simple as syncing do a desktop or VM somewhere, if you wanted.

You could back up your NextCloud to an external Storage instance like Amazon S3 or Wasabi (this one seems to be a good deal at the moment -- $5 / TB /month).

Isn't the whole Idea behind Nextcloud is to be used as a back up of the primary storage for devices? I haven't looked into this enough to tell you one way or the other as to how I would back up the back up, Probably would take @scottalanmiller 's advice and back it up to a VM . . .

What makes NextCloud a backup?

Hardly. That's the same as saying "isn't a mapped drive a backup"? No, it's just a form of storage. Nothing is a backup, if it is the original.

Fair enough, I confused the 2 ( Storage and Back up)
