Passmark shows the i7 at 10803 and the i5 at 8889. But as I rarely care abotu this, I do not know what their benchmark value even means.

That is my initial thought, except the Dells this client bought in 2013 were i7. So I have user perception to deal with.

The decision maker at this client is decently well versed in understanding IT terminology.
I will probably let him decide and just present both and say the benchmarks do not really support the extra cost.

One of them does CAD, the rest will barely be taxed day to day. My recommendation was not to upgrade.

Generally the alternative is 8GB, which can easily be too little.

@scottalanmiller I have been giving out 8 for several years now. Maybe it is time to check my users' utilization. I am sure that some people could benefit from more but I would be surprised if most were above 60%.

I do okay on 8GB, but I only run two browsers, no apps, and do it on Linux.
