What's your thought on replacing power supply fan? The computer in question is Dell Vostro... 6+ years old. It's not worth the money to buy a new power supply for this machine at this point. Have anyone replace a fan in a power supply before?

It depends. Some fan connectors are soldered in, so it's not worth the hassle. If it has regular 3 or 4 pin, or even molex connector, it shouldn't take longer than 10 minutes.

The computer is old. The owner is not very tech savy, nor has cash to spend. I'm trying to help her save as much money as possible. Right now it's running, but the grinding noise is very annoying.

I found a guide on instructables which gives me the idea of replacing just the fan.

@stess replacing the fan will cost the customer more money in your time and parts.

          Just replace the entire thing.

@dustinb3403 I'm not charging her my time. She's my mom's friend. I helped her multiple time already.. just this time I am not sure if it's doable.

This is your failure. Do not continue to fail. You have been given the right answer.

@stess So you're time is worthless (in this case).

Still wasting time and money for something that isn't a guarantee to fix the issue.

Not practical. $100 or more of your time to fix something worth probably nothing. It's bad economics. If this was a business decision you'd toss the box in a second.

If you want to help, buy her s new computer (used) for cheaper than your time fixing this one.

Time is a commodity the OP probably has more than money.

Possibly, and that's kind of valuable, but this is likely a multi-hour project for a few dollar item.

Is best and more efficient to buy a new powersupply rather than spending time on an older workstation. The fan needs to be desoldered and then solder the new one back in. That's a lot of time of labor that can readily be done with a $34 part.
