              R730xd has front and rear drive bays. First server with 1.8" drive bays.

                Three drive configs on the xd:

                1. 24 2.5" front & 2x 2.5" rear
                2. 12 3.5" front, 4 2.5" internal and 2 2.5" rear
                3. 18 1.8" front, 8 3.5" front and 2 2.5" rear

                        Looks like it's because the are orientating the hard drives vertical to get more in the chassis.

                              They were verticals in the 24 drive R720xd too.

                                  1.8" are used for SSDs. The mSATA format. The Drobo 5D uses one.

                                      Looks like a pretty good upgrade. That change in caching worries me a bit, though.

                                        LSI controllers are always RAID 100. Just set the span size to two for RAID 10.
