Maybe something like this!
But on a more serious note, this is pretty cool:

For the top one, the kids would be able to play while you work, but mosquitos and heat would still be an issue.
For the bottom one, just change out the glass on top for something opaque and we may be onto something. Bring in one good hail storm and that whole thing is busted up.

He'll need air conditioning... If you use something opaque for the top, you could stick on the RV kind of roof AC unit.

We have to fix up the back patio area as it is, too. Ugh, so much to do.

Some nice ideas there. You need to add IoT lighting so that you can make the whole yard change colours.

Got to start on the big ideas before you can begin to work on the details.

It's Texas... they are all about freedom or something.

Permits are for non-Texans.

I was looking for pictures of my backyard for this and found that not a single one is tagged as such in my photos. But I DID find this great picture of my other backyard at my NY house. Now I remember why my kids don't want to give up that house, this is right outside New York City.

Man... that's lucky.

Here is the most recent picture of the backyard in Carrollton. This was taken around January when the snow was on the ground.

The yard goes off to the right just a little bit, but it is not a big yard by any stretch. The downside is that being so small will make it challenging to fit all of the things in that we want. The upside is that it isn't such an extreme project to make it all work. The firepit in the middle was not done by me and has to go, it's ridiculous. And that furniture is all dead, that has to go too
-
Here is a horrible Google Satellite view of the house that is clearly taken before we bought the place, so is from pre-2011 at least.

Why not enclose that porch area as your office. You can put in huge picture windows. I see a lot of fencing. Which I understand is for privacy, if the fencing is yours have you thought about doing a nice tall hedge instead? I am doing a Privet hedge at my house instead of fence. They can get up to 8' tall. I like looking at a hedge more than a fence. Plus it is cheaper.

That porch is directly off of the living room and the main entrance to the outdoors. If we turned that into the office, my office would be part of the dining room on one side and part of the living room on the other and be non-stop foot traffic of people heading outside.

And coming back in, and going back out, and coming back in....
-
Yeah. And I want the office to really feel isolated from the house, not like I'm sitting in the living room, which is nearly where my office is now. The current office is on the far side of the dining room.

@scottalanmiller What style do you like? Rustic, western, modern, industrial?
