Too bad Chromebooks are out, they are easily under that price.

Just to ask, can they use office online? If they just need office and internet I'm thinking they could get away with that and then you could use a chromebook.

              a Inspiron 15 5000 2-in-1 starts out at about $450

I wonder why dell is still selling 5400rpm hdd for their stuff. That otherwise competent laptop you linked is gimped by that single piece of hardware. Worse, to actually get an ssd in an Inspiron the lowest price is 899, which is only 128GB SSD and a 1TB super slow hdd.
edit: You could get that $450 one then just buy an ssd from newegg for less than $100.

No idea what you looked at because I just bought a 13" Inspiron 2 in 1 with an i7, 8b ram, and a 256gb SSD for $800. Straight from dell's website.

I just went up a level on @gjacobse link to Inspiron and chose SSD checkbox. 899 was the cheapest i found.
Now i just went to dell.com, chose laptops>Work>SSD Checkbox and got the same 899
edit: The ssd option is greyed out if you choose a screen size of 11"-14" from their website. You may have gotten something during a sale.

That's like an exact copy of the Asus 🙂 Maybe Asus is making it for them, that is really common.

Both the Asus and Dell look pretty good. The SSD is what makes the difference. I still can't believe these new laptops have 5400 spinning drives.

But then you are stuck with Lenovo gear. And stuff from eBay. That's a lot of risk in two different ways when good vendors have stuff in the pricerange, too, without needing to go to eBay and taking that risk.

The more expensive Dell ones aren't bad. But you're right Lenovo's trackpoint was the most useful one.

What about the Lenovos are so nice? Haven't used one in a long time. Remember the IBM nipples?

No other company steals and spies on you nearly so well as Lenovo does either. I agree with you that they make the best laptops around hardware wise, but that just can't negate the rest of what they do to us, the customer.

We have one and it's not good hardware. It's not cheap, not good. Forgetting the spying stuff, it's not up to par with far cheaper vendors in my opinion. The track pad is fine, but nothing good enough that I would ever have thought to mention it. Seems roughly the same as my Asus trackpad. But we had to replace the wifi card to even get it to work, and it has been only moderately reliable. Definitely not the worst hardware, but certainly not good enough to qualify as "good". I'd put it below Mac and Dell in quality.
