No One Cares About Your Data

Great article today from FossForce: Evil Hackers Are Not After You
This is a really important concept that IT people need to understand well - our systems are only as valuable as the data that is stored on them. The cost for government agencies to spy on us, for hackers to be after us and so form is nonsensical unless our data is special and they know about it. For the majority of people, including me, my data just isn't worth anyone taking an interest in it.

While I agree with that premise, that doesn't mean that we should be so lackadasical with personal security.

I only agree at the micro level, at the macro level your data is highly valuable. They can start making patterns, etc. From there they use that data to manipulate you. Not you, Scott Allen Miller, the public in general.
-
This also depends where you work

Who is "they"? Manipulation doesn't require data.

The point everyone seems to be missing here is that the bad guys are not after your data, they are simply after data. NO one is targeting you or your company.
They are simply spewing shit out their ass and hoping for the one idiot to click on it and get them granted a dump of data.
They then parse whatever they get hoping something useful was dropped.
This has nothing to do with you @Dashrender and everything to do with just getting anything that they can.

That might apply to malware, but not hackers.

This all goes back to the CIA triangle. Confidentiality, Integrity, and Availability. An attacker will try to compromise 1 of those 3 components.
