I should have mentioned, they are general office.
            Web apps
            QuickBooks
Handful of background programs (AV, backup, cloud sync tools etc)
            Office
            watching media
            email
            printing/scanning

There are no "power apps", games, 3D, CAD, video rendering, etc.

Regardless, the previous towers aren't that old. For example Core-i5 3GHz, 8GB RAM, 1TB platters, Win7.
You'd think this could handle things, and it does chug along, but somehow they make the above work even grind these systems down.

I know SSD will be huge. As well I want to get on Win 10 Pro.

I could keep and upgrade those, but the plan is to replace, and trickle those systems down to be reloaded and replace even older systems around here.
It's nice to make the boss feel special, always getting the new computers, and the rest of us get the hand-me-downs.

Ah I thought you meant actual workstation. Then yes a z440 is too much ha.

I used to get those as well but had bad thermal issues with them and never forgave the form factor.

I've been pretty much exclusively SFF or smaller for a decade now. Can't stand big desktops.

Full size atx board and case at home. ten hdd bays, ten usb ports in back 4 on top. 2 esata, 1 spdif, 1 digital coax. More available usb headers if I wanted to go nuts. 3pcix16 slots. At work obviously don't do that though. We have a few of these
                      HP 110-500 Desktop
                      I didn't buy them.
the first time I picked one up I thought it was an empty case. The board is smaller than micro, some proprietary hp stuff outsourced to whoever makes the boards, and takes up about 25% of the area of the side of the case. Powersupply is an external brick that uses less than 50W max. They also suck as computers.

                          Agree there, that's awful.

Like @stacksofplates I like the HP z series for a true workstation. They have some different form factors, but you can buy a used one pretty cheap for the power they have because they started off life as $1,600 workstations. The only down side might be that the Xeon is a little more power hungry than some other processors. (and the form factor if you want something small enough to mount to the back of your monitor)

Agree with you, I use a z240 and it's beautifully built. It's cheap, also.

I'm an HP guy myself. The last round was HP EliteDesk 800 G1 SFF at $850 without a monitor. 3 year warranty with direct to level 2 support - you call and say you have a bad mobo or drive, and they pretty much just ship you one.

I do have two of those micro form factors that @JaredBusch posted (they are HP though). They've been in place for a little over a year and have had no issues.

These units require the use of an external powersupply.

Ya we jam ours full of everything. The 440s have 128GB RAM with dual 6 core and the 840s have 256GB RAM and I believe dual 12 core. Both have M4000s also.

We still have some S20s (thinkstation) around. I have one at home also.

Same powersupply that laptops use. and it is not like a computer doe snot need a power cord.
