      @Dashrender Here's Vembu's take on the two products --

      https://www.vembu.com/blog/comparing-vembu-backup-free-edition-veeams-free-nothing-edition/

      P.S. This was written over a year ago, so I imagine both products have advanced since that time.

        Vembu has been in the business for many years now .. they started of with a peer-to-peer (I'm not sure if this is the right term) backup software, and it was pretty good ... I haven;t used any of the products recently, but based on my experience, their new free backup certainly warrants a try.. Infact, I think I'll do that today ..

            On the pricing page it would seem you have to pay to store the data. Online backup is 20 cents per gig. The image backup is $30/year per workstation to store on your own data center, or 20 cents a gig/month for theirs.

              it's funny, that page indicates that Veeam is superiorly weak, lacking compared to Vembu. They claim that Vembu is all free, then you go looking to the price page, that seems hardly the case.

                Found this recent reply over on SW. Still unclear if the "linux Vembu Backup Server" is also free or requires a license in this scenario.

                Edit: Looks like a license is required -- https://community.spiceworks.com/topic/post/6121543

                  Am I incorrect in thinking that license wise you could use Veeam Free Endpoint protection to backup bare metal servers?
                  Does the licensing say desktop OS only?

                    I don't recall seeing anything about Server or Desktop OSes in the licensing with the Endpoint Recovery Free.

                          It's a one off type solution. No central management, so I'm not really surprised. I'm guessing the idea here is, if a company isn't going to pay for a paid backup solution, then what is the harm in allowing them to use this free product there.

                          If/when the company decides managing everything separately, the hope is they will move to the paid product.

                            I guess it is to keep them from just using Windows Backup.
