Walking Dead Plot Holes - How would IT folk survive
-
Of course you would have to have teams ready to go and clear the track at any given time. If a tree has fallen on the track you need to get it moved immediately.
But slow and steady would win with this every time. Just need a team of people who can operate chain saws (or team saws).
That or figure out a decent way to move the tree with the train. Maybe a winch system of some sort....
-
Even without moving, the train is pretty easy to secure. It is elevated, designed to be locked up and you can move from car to car without being exposed.
-
@scottalanmiller But how would you move a big tree that's fallen directly across the track, or worse, in line with it?

My point was you don't have to, at least not anytime soon. And two, you just push it. What tree is bigger than a train can move?

Or took out the track with a torch or worse... or blasted the bridge you need to use since there isn't another one for 1,000 miles....

I suppose... i mean trains do move a lot.....
But trees break or fall over all of the time. The chances of a tree falling onto the track are a constant.

Not in the US, trees are cleared from near tracks. They can't fall onto tracks or the trains couldn't safely do 110 mph + today. Tracks specifically don't have trees nearby in the US. Most of Europe, too.

Zombies don't do that.

But people might if they see that you have something they want. People are generally jealous, and they would do something as stupid as destroying the track to have the train....

But how would that work? They see you with a train so they risk their lives to get ahead of you, guess where you are going, expose themselves to zombies and ruin the usefulness of that train, and all others, to themselves, just to stop you? Not at all realistic.

It's not a matter of being "realistic" people do incredibly stupid things all of the time. Have you watched Youtube lately?
I'd literally bet my life that there would be a person or group that would try to ruin the track for the purpose of having whatever you have.
Even if they don't want the train, they might just want your supplies.

But people that stupid would be dead. No matter how much you think someone is dumb enough to try it, the more likely they are to try it is directly connected to how unlikely that they will succeed or survive.
-
I still think a mega yacht would be a better approach to survival, if you can get one.
Military boats would probably be at sea already, so those are off the list. And are probably far to complex to manage for a non-military person.

But would turn into zombies long before you even realized that they were after them. They wouldn't get your supplies, they'd just get eaten by zombies and/or be forced to try to siege your rolling fortress that you control. They might be able to block the tracks, but you can always not go there, go back, turn around, etc.

How quickly can a train turn around..... or even reverse away from a blocked path? (honestly asking)
I would imagine that if a group could block the tracks, that they'd essentially would've won the battle. Besides against the zombies.

About thirty seconds. Nowhere nearly as fast as a car, but fast. Remember they are electric drive so crazy torque. And they have a LOT of traction. So they can stop on a dime at 8-10 mph with a light load. Fast enough that someone trying to catch you would have a really, really tough time. Especially if you control the train, the firepower from the train, have the high ground lookout of the train and control the horn to call zombies to you whenever you want.

If you block it with people, you're toast. If you block it with cars, you need a lot of them. A LOT of them. If you block it with buidings and stuff, the train can see it from a long way away. It's very, very hard to surprise a train because of long, straight tracks.
-
How are modern trains powered?
How would anyone controlling a train maintain it long enough to let everyone die of, along with the zombies?
-
So diesel, or overhead electric cables. . .
-
Which means, you have a very finite amount of fuel before your stuck (somewhere) hopefully with fewer zombies than from where you came.
But presumably the zombies would just follow you for as long as there are tracks..
