Well, unlike an XboX, cars kill people, so there will be a requirement that these things are like 99.999% no bugs. Think about airplanes, they don't release those with Xbox level bugs. They've had automated take off and landing for years now, actually they have automated everything now. I think the pilot is there more as a facade for passengers.
Yup, pilots are there as a tertiary backup thing and to make passengers comfortable. In fact, pilots taking over is normally what kills people. The automated systems are pretty amazing.

What I think is going to happen is this.... some child is going to get killed in a situation that has become unheard of because automated drivers are so safe. There is going to be a major lawsuit for manslaughter one, it's going to make national media front pages and people are going to start equating driving your own car to DUI today. People will start to say that getting behind the wheel of a car without computer control is deciding to put kids' lives at risk even before you pull out of the garage.
And, in reality, the stats make it sound like this is true. Driving drunk hardly guarantees an accident. Most drunks hit nothing, but the risk is too high. Once we have a dramatically safer alternative, a human driving will be statistically the same difference as a sober versus drunk driver today.
Then, likely, the insurance companies take it from there. There will be "automatic car only" clauses.

I once woke up on the opposite side of a city (small one) having fallen asleep before I entered it. Thankfully my eyes were open and my automatic system managed to just follow a car in front of me (through a few turns!!!) but it was pretty scary when I came to and had no idea where I was.

Did you hear about the guy last week who went to sleep and let his self driving car do all of the driving? Cops pulled him over asleep. Unfortunately for him, the current laws require you to remain awake.

So far in testing they are already outperforming all but the best humans. Zero at fault accidents and nearly no not at fault accidents. The initial release has been out for a while and doing quite well... from several companies. Google and Tesla have both been on the road for a while now.

Only one variable really matters.... humans are terrible at driving. We react very slowly and don't pay attention well. And we get drowsy. And sneeze, cough, blink, have heart attacks, etc.
What are you talking.. Just because i cannot recall over half of my drive from St. Louis to Chicago yesterday evening?
I once woke up on the opposite side of a city (small one) having fallen asleep before I entered it. Thankfully my eyes were open and my automatic system managed to just follow a car in front of me (through a few turns!!!) but it was pretty scary when I came to and had no idea where I was.
Yes, never assume I am against self driving cars. I want them functional, legal, and available soon. Personally I want one really bad.
I'm in front of JB in line for a self driving car, but he currently really has higher need for one than me.

I'm sure you've seen the ads.My point is, if autonomous cars are better than humans, why should we allow a human to ever be able to control the vehicle? We should only input the address of where we want to go, tap a button and be on our way. The car should do everything from there, route planning and everything else.

We should only input the address of where we want to go, tap a button and be on our way. The car should do everything from there, route planning and everything else.
Because the cars and other technology don't exist yet in a tried and trued way yet. Give it another 5 years and it might be.
But the public won't simply accept it because someone claims it's so. Plus how do you handle the poor? Is this going to be another government program, trade in your old clunker that isn't worth $500 for a brand new $20K (probably more like $80K) car? I hope not.
