Best XMPP Client Options for OpenFire
-
What is everyone's consensus on the best XMPP client options for use with the Ignite Realtime OpenFire XMPP server? The native Spark client is mostly good but not ideal and requires Java which, as we all know, is not a good thing, and contrary to why Java seems obvious to use is not available outside of Windows.
Popular Choices Seem To Be:
-
Thunderbird surprised me as the last time that I had checked there was no XMPP client functionality built into it, but that appears to no longer be true.

From the site: Multi-channel chat - Enjoy real-time conversation with your contacts, right from your favorite messaging application, with multiple supported networks. Thunderbird makes it easy to search through both past conversations and received emails.

Jitsi is really focused no multi-media and SIP...

Pidgin really seems to be the all around general XMPP client of choice.

I've used Pandion previously, seems like its not being actively developed anymore https://github.com/pandion/pandion

I've used pidgin in the past.. It was very usable. And supports OTR.

This is a problem with many XMPP clients. If you go to nearly any directory for them, they are all discontinued. Any time that I look for one, they are all dead projects. It was a popular open source project once upon a time and so everyone did one, or started one.

Pidgin is the only one that I have used that is still around that I know of. It has been good for a long time. I would recommend it.
-
I moved to Pidgin a few years back... Was logging into about 8 different accounts with it.
-
I'd like to find one that works with Facebook... and actually marks my Facebook messages as read when I read them in the chat client.

Pidgin and Thunderbird both do, I believe. So does Skype.
-
I have used some web based clients in the past. They were not all that great, but they worked and there is something to be said about not needing to have anything deployed to the users' machines at all and for them being able to work from anywhere, not just work machines.

Say what? Skype will read FB messages?
-
Yes, Skype talks to FB by default as long as you sign in
-
@scottalanmiller The only Gotcha is that your Facebook Friend also has to be using Skype from what I can see.
-
Oh that sucks, I did not realize that.
-
Came here to say Spark, but since that is not ideal I would definitely say Pigeon. Used it before and it is very well rounded.

Then that is not using FB messenger, that's just finding people in skype through FB.. near worthless.
I want what Pidgin provides, multiple protocols in a single console.
-
Pidgin is probably your choice then.
